Change can sometimes be difficult, but in the case of our new seed vendor it was great. Our new seed supplier has high quality seeds and at a much lower price! For example, a 20 pound bag of hulled sunflower is now $12 lower. Besides the new packaging to get used to, our seed blends have also changed. We love our new offerings and we would be happy to help you find a new seed blend to fit your situation. Use the coupon below to help you find your new favorite mix. We have fielded numerous calls about Sand Hill Cranes migrating along the Front Range this week. The later part of October is the peak of their migration through the eastern plains. Often, they migrate at such high altitudes that you can hear them passing over, but cannot locate them. We see and hear them on days with light to moderate northern winds which help push them along. To hear their calls and to learn more about Sand Hills in Colorado, click on the links below.
Q: How can I keep my red-breasted nuthatch around this winter?
A: Red-breasted nuthatches, like their compatriots the chickadees and other nuthatches, like sunflower seeds, nuts, and suet. There is no telling whether they will stick around for the winter, but I'm with you in wanting to see them stay. I love watching their crazy antics and lively manner. I have had at least three in and around my yard for the past few months and I don't see that changing until spring. One of their favorite feeders in my yard is the suet log. This is a suet feeder I made from a 4x4 with holes drilled for suet plugs (which we sell-surprise). If you need some pointers on establishing suet feeding, we would be happy to talk to you about that. In terms of nuts, they prefer tree nuts and peanuts out of the shell fed on a platform or hopper feeder or in a peanut feeder. The bird baths in my yard are also very popular with the nuthatches. Good luck.
