September 26, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Sunny and warm. 75°F. 2-8 mph.
binoculars and child

To end up the warmest September on record, we headed to Rabbit Mountain to do a bit of raptor watching. It was really dry and warm in the bright sun on our climb up. The sweltering conditions did not inhibit five year old Kira from climbing! It was not optimal conditions for raptor viewing, but Rabbit Mountain is one of the best places in the county to raptor watch during fall migration. Go up to the Little Thompson Overlook to watch raptors when we have wind from the north or northeast.

     Swainson's Hawk
Swainson's Hawks are in the peak of their long southern migration. These regal birds will travel all the way to Argentina before returning to our plains to nest next summer. I will miss them. One of the high points of today's walk was when a Swainson's flew right over us. Thrilling.
