September 19, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Sunny, calm, and pleasant. 65°F. 0-2 mph. 12 participants.
binoculars and child

As many bird watchers can relate to, this morning was a feast or famine kind of outing. We ended up with a good species total and saw many interesting birds, but we had many extended birdless periods. However, the fall weather was so spectacular that those periods really didn't matter.

   Loggerhead Shrike

     Loggerhead Shrike
We debated a while about whether this bird was a northern or a loggerhead shrike. It's always valuable to contemplate these similar species and listen to the observations of the group. This is how we get better at identification. Hopefully, next time we see a shrike all these fine points of identification will come back to us. This bird showed a broad eye band which met over the beak. It had a stout beak without a great hook at the end and it lacked any fine barring on its chest. For these reasons, we called it a loggerhead.
