September 12, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Warm and partly cloudy. 80°F. 2-10 mph. 14 participants.

Despite the balmy conditions this morning, there was a real feeling of fall. I think it was the smell of fallen leaves. Many local cottonwoods suffered from leaf fungus this year which has resulted in trees dropping their leaves before turning colors like a normal fall. You will see these cottonwoods in our slide show. So I'm afraid our fall colors will be lacking many brilliant yellow cottonwoods.

   Rock Wren
İNeal Zaun

        Rock Wren
Rock Wrens are aptly named because you never see them away from rocks. At our old house I was designing a water/rock garden and had a large pile of rocks delivered. A few days later, there was a rock wren on the pile. I had never seen one in that yard until my rock delivery. So this morning that is exactly where we found the wren - on a pile of rocks. Don't look for this wren to go around with its tail in the air. Overall, that is not a very reliable clue for helping identify a rock (or many of the other) wrens.
