July 25, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Warm and clear. 80°F. 4-10 mph. 13 participants.
binoculars and child

On this warm morning it was nice to bird watch in a place with shade. Old St. Vrain Road has several cliff faces which shade you from morning sun and many large trees along the road to shade you when not near the cliffs. The birds were also concerned about (or should I say lethargic) due to the heat because it was a little slow by Old St. Vrain standards.

Bald Eagle
Good things come to those who wait. I used to hate phrases like that when I was young, but today it came true. Unfortunately, everyone who came on the walk had dispersed at this final point except the captives in my car. We had just been looking at the empty bald eagle nest north of Foothills Reservoir. The rest of the Saturday Birders drove back to 36 to return to Boulder, but I drove east to return to Boulder. 'Sometimes', I was explaining to my prisoners, 'the eagles like to hang out at the far end of the pasture from their nest'. No sooner had I said that when we spotted a large bird on the ground. I pulled over to find it was an immature bald eagle. While I was adjusting my car off the road, the eagle flew closer. We watched the eagle walk around and take a drink. It seemed a bit clueless as to what to do which is not unusual for a young eagle. Let's just hope it gets a clue and turns into a majestic adult.
