June 27, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Sunny and warm. 70°F. 2-5 mph. 17 participants.

We moved one canyon to the south from Skunk Canyon for this Saturday's walk. The birds and habitat are similar in both canyons, but we did see some different things this week. One notable difference is Bear Canyon had quite a bit of water in it, whereas Skunk Canyon was bone dry. In nature, you can always see the signs of the coming season in the present one. Today, I will officially proclaim the end of spring migration, because next week will be the beginning of 'fall' migration. For me, the kickoff to 'fall' migration is the fiery male rufous hummingbirds entering Colorado on the Fourth of July. As we say at the Wild Bird Company, 'the fireworks begin on the fourth of July', owing to the rufous hummingbird's aggressive nature.

Note: Next week the Fourth of July is on a Saturday and we are closed so we will not have our regular walk. See you on the 11th!

Plumbeous Vireo
The Plumbeous vireo gets its name from its lead coloring.  The chemical symbol for lead is Pb which is derived from the Latin plumbum. The name plumbeous vireo has only been in use since 1997 when solitary vireos were split into three species, one of which is the plumbeous. We found the nest this morning by watching one of the vireos with food in its mouth. It kept flying all around us, but it neither ate the bug nor flew off so we knew it wanted to deliver the food. We soon found the occupied nest and moved off so the prey delivery could commence. Sometimes you can find vireo nests because of their strange habit of singing while on their nest.
