June 20, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Sunny and warm. 70°F. 2-8 mph. 20 participants.

The gap between our starting time and the sun rise was vast today because of tomorrow's solstice. Combined with the warm weather, that spells lessened bird activity on the walk. That is exactly what we found this morning. However, it did allow us to get further up the trail in Skunk Canyon and see or hear the ovenbird, American Redstarts, and our Bird of the Day. Lots of great insect and flower images on the slide show this week. Note: the feast on miller moths over the last month has been replaced by feasting on tree cicadas in Skunk Canyon.

Nashville Warbler
When we saw our Bird of the Day this week I called it a Virginia's Warbler. I was too busy trying to take a picture that I did not see it was the less common Nashville Warbler that we were looking at. Unfortunately, it did not stick around for too long. When I started looking through my images from the walk I noticed this bird had a lot more yellow on its chest and flanks than the typical Virginia's. Also, this bird showed some yellow on the throat and greenish wings which Virginia's don't have. Both birds have white eye rings, but this bird showed a prominent one more typical of a Nashville. So now I wish I could go back in time and pay greater attention to this bird because I have seen few Nashvilles in Colorado.
