June 6, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Warm and partly cloudy. 60°F. 2-6 mph. 20 participants.
binoculars and child

We came across a huge hatch of damselflies this morning, especially at Teller Pond #5. As you will see from the slide show, the blackbirds were taking full advantage of this hatch. Young coots and pied-billed grebes were out this morning. June is such a great bird watching month because of all the activity surrounding nesting and caring for young.

Yellow-Headed Blackbird
Male Yellow-Headed Blackbirds were out "singing" and establishing territory this morning. At both Teller and Sombrero, their nasal songs and calls filled the air. Many of the images from this weeks' slide show have blackbirds with damselflies and dragonflies in their beaks. Clark Anderson even snapped one showing a yellow-head about to dunk its meal in the water. I have often observed various blackbirds, especially common grackles, dunking their food in my bird bath before flying off. I think this behavior may be related to providing more hydration to their nestlings.
