May 23, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk
Partly cloudy (i.e some sun!) and cool. 50°F.
2-5 mph. 17 participants.
binoculars and child

It was great to see a little sun this morning (before the afternoon rains). I think our songbird migration has been on hold and now that the rainy and cold weather is letting up, the birds are coming through in droves. We don't often hit 60 species in a morning like we did today. Let's hope the trend continues!

Black Tern
Black terns are about as dapper as they come. Combined with the elegant flight of a tern and you have a real show stopper. I don't get to see these small terns very often, but when I do it seems it's always on cool, cloudy days in May when the swallows are also swarming at the ponds. You can see in the slide show the enormous number of swallows at Sombrero along with the black terns. The terns were not close so some of our images are a bit fuzzy, but you can still see the elegant form and striking plumage.
