May 2, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk

May is here! My favorite two birding months are now upon us and this morning was just the beginning. Many of the waterfowl are on their way out, but we still found a good variety collectively at the places we visited. Now, the songbirds will be flooding in! Some notable experiences from this morning were the Cooper's Hawk going after a mink, watching the ibis fly, osprey everywhere, and the red-tailed hawk and killdeer babies.

Sandhill Crane
Today's spotting of a Sandhill Crane is out-of-season. We usually expect to see occasional flocks of Sandhills flying over in October and March, but rarely stopping. In the past couple of years, a small number of cranes have lingered in the County into early summer. I think this is an indication of future nesting in the County! Wouldn't that be fantastic! Historically, Sandhill Cranes have only nested in the western slope parks and valleys. We've got to preserve our glassland habitats in eastern if we want to eventually have Sandhills nest here. Sandhill Cranes are naturally gray birds, but if you look at the slide show you will see the bird we saw has a rust-coloring to its plumage. These rusty feathers are purposefully painted by the birds themselves using iron rich mud and vegetation to adorn themselves and increase their camouflage.
