April 18, 2015 Saturday Bird Walk

We tried to visit only places with paved paths due to the recent rain. The rain during the walk didn't help our bird activity, but that's part of the experience. It was great to see more returning birds like the Franklin's Gulls, mourning doves, all the swallows, and our Bird of the Day. The warblers will be back before you know it!

Yellow-Headed Blackbird

Yellow-Headed Blackbird
Their song doesn't really remind me of spring. In fact, I have their call/song on my phone to tell me I have a voice mail. (I don't really like voice messages) It's a bit harsh sounding and sharp, yet still intriguing. I got very excited today when I heard the yellow-headed blackbirds giving their harsh calls. The cattails which they will build their nests in are just starting to emerge from the mat of old plants smashed down by winter snow. Already they are establishing territory and chasing the red-winged and fellow yellow-headed blackbirds from their chosen spots. The females will be back soon to make their choice of the mate who owns the best territory. Click on the link below if you too want a yellow-headed blackbird to give you the harsh reminder that you have a phone message.
