Saturday, March 7, 2015 Bird Walk

Sunny and mild seems to be the pattern we're in. A lot different from the weather pattern we've had in the last month. The bluebirds should be rolling in with this present weather pattern. Perhaps, we will go looking for them next week! Today, we had a good variety. March is duck month and we saw a lot of them.

Note: The slide show this week shows an American Kestrel eating a mouse/vole for those of you who wish to avoid such an image.

Cinnamon Teal
İSteve Frye
  Cinnamon Teal

The cinnamon teal is the shoveler of the teal world. Unlike the dainty bill of the green-winged teal, the cinnamon has a long and spatulate bill designed for skimming the water's surface. Also like a northern shoveler, they have powder blue wing coverts which you can see in Jack Klase's image on the slide show this week. You can spot a male cinnamon from far away. No other duck has that strikingly rich orangey-red and brick-red combination. When you get a closer look you'll see its long gold and black tertials lying on its back, perhaps a hint of the powder blue wing coverts, and a rather creepy red eye. Quite a sight to behold!
