Saturday, January 17, 2015 Bird Walk

We travelled east this morning trying to avoid the wind. We were relatively successful which is always good because really windy conditions are not good for bird watching. Both the birds and the observers want to hide when it is really windy out. Look for increased raptor nesting activity and good waterfowl numbers in the coming month.

Great Horned Owl

  Great Horned Owl

We found this owl sunning in the low morning light on the edge of a dense thicket. This bird was quite large so I would assume it is a female. Female great horned and many other owl and raptor species are larger than the males. We spent some time also looking for her mate in this thicket. Great horned owls are starting to nest now and there is a good chance that if you find one owl at this time of the year, you can also its mate. We were unsuccessful in the mate search, but I'm sure it was in there somewhere.
