It's the time of year to give thanks, and I need to thank all of you, my customers, for the wonderful support and camaraderie. I would also like to thank my manager Wendy Stuart for the terrific work and support. Of course, the store would not be possible without the loving support of my family. The Wild Bird Center is looking forward to a great new year with some exciting changes. Have a wonder-filled new year, get out and enjoy the great out-of-doors, and thank you very much.

Real and Virtual Bird Walks

The Wild Bird Center holds free bird walks every Saturday Morning throughout the year. We also email the list of birds we saw along with a slide show of pictures taken on each of our bird walks. This way you can attend a real or virtual bird walk every week (or both)! To sign up for the bird walk email go to our website wbcboulder.com and click on the email sign up. This is all we will send you, but it comes out once a week. I have a few wonderful customers that help me take images on the walk and it is really fun to see what we capture. To attend a walk just show up at the Wild Bird Center, no reservations required. We carpool and leave promptly at 7:30am and return about 10:30am. Destinations vary and are chosen at the time of departure. If you have any questions call the store at 303-442-1322.

Fat for Life
We are not the only ones who enjoy eating fat for the holidays. Birds are attracted to suet (fat) especially in winter because they burn it to stay warm. Pacific Bird Suet Cakes cost a little more, but they last a whole lot longer.

                 Ask Steve

Q:
What should I get my ________________ for Christmas?

A: This is a question we answer a lot (as you may have guessed). So below are some categories and suggestions you may want to consider. Remember that you are always welcome to return or exchange items at the Wild Bird Center.

Gifts for the Bird Feeder who has everything:

It's hard to get a bird gift for this person because you don't know exactly what they have. So you either need to get them something unusual, something that they use up, or something you can always use more of. I like to suggest fruit feeders for these folks. They are unusual and most birders don't have one. Also consider jelly/mealworm feeders, a diamond tail-prop suet feeder, or a heated bird bath. Squirrel-proof feeders are appreciated by the good people who love to feed birds. Seed is always welcome and given the prices lately - a very nice gift. You could combine that with an overgrown bag clip called a Handy Camel which works great for resealing seed bags. Big seed logs are great for the juncos and they don't blow away in our winter winds. We have some new seed logs and even a feeder for them if you like.

Gifts for Kids:

For small kids we have Charlie Harper Sticker Books. For older kids, they might enjoy a bird feeder and the responsibility of maintaining it. If you have a budding field birder, a pair of binoculars would be highly cherished.

Gifts for the Bird Watcher:

A good field guide (or bird song CD) is always required for a beginning birder. We have some laminated guides that are great for the car. For the serious birder we have the new book Rare Birds of North America. Take the weight of your binoculars off your neck with a binocular harness. And what beginning bird watcher wouldn't want a pair of binoculars! Here's a clever idea-bring them along on one of our (free) Saturday Bird Walks, then take them out to breakfast. Give them a bird watching experience for Christmas!

Gifts for Gardeners:

We have a wide variety of gifts good for the gardener from the practical to the decorative. A glass bird bath and a decorative bird house would spruce up any garden. Also, we just got in some table-top bird feeders which look more like garden art than a bird feeder. For a more practical gift, how about a bat box, a wildlife gardening book, or some plantskydd critter repellent for your gardener. A stone bird bath will last forever and add a feeling of permanence to the garden.

Gifts for Families:

A feeder set up including a feeder, pole, and seed is a great gift to give an entire family or relative. They can all enjoy it. A nice bird bath could serve the same purpose. Take care of the Aunt, Uncle, and the Cousins all with the same gift.

Gifts for the Non-Birder:

We have nice gifts even for those who are not 'into' birds. Gifts for these folks might include shade-grown coffee, bird dish towels, cards, ornaments, puzzles, wind chimes, or a calendar.

For Stocking Stuffers:

A few of the smaller things we have that you might consider stocking stuffers are earrings and necklaces, bird ornaments, seed bells, bird CD, seed ball feeder, or even a suet cake and feeder.

For a House Warming Present:

It's always nice to bring a little present with you when you visit others during the holidays. We would suggest bringing something like a snowman feeder and seed, seed ornaments, shade-grown coffee, a small specialty bird feeder, or a bird ornament. New this year are some small bird seed bags which tell about the Scandinavian tradition of spreading bird seed on Christmas.

Anyone:

We think that bird feeders are always a great gift, be it a regular seed feeder or something different like a nyjer feeder, hummingbird feeder, fruit feeder, suet feeder, or a squirrel-proof feeder. Also, everyone needs a good field guide. Note card sets by graphic artist Wendy Morgan are always popular. Bird baths can be as much fun (or more) to watch as a bird feeder. Everyone could use a good bath or even a heated bath for the winter. And, if all else fails, we have gift certificates!

How do I make those peanut butter pine cones?

A. They are really quite simple to make and the birds like the chickadees love them. Recently, I have had a flock of bushtits that come by who are partial to them. By the way, this would be a great present for kids to give. Make up 4 or 6 of these pine cones and put them in a plastic-lined decorated box. Sounds a bit Martha-like don't you  think? Anyway, here's how to do it.

First, get some pine cones. Use a pipe cleaner and wrap one end of it tightly around the cone, the other end you will use to hang it up. Holding onto the pipe cleaner, use a knife or spoon to cover the pine cone in your peanut butter mixture. I like to use about a 50-50 mix of shortening and peanut butter. Put the mixture in the microwave to soften it if you need to. After the pine cone is coated, roll it in some seeds. I like to use our Western Patio or Songbird Blend as coatings for bird pine cones.
