We had to work for it this morning. There was not a lot of bird activity (at least at the places we had selected) this morning. It seemed that every time I tried to look at a bird (or photograph it) all kinds of twigs or grasses were in the way. Those things combined with the weather, made it a bit of a slog. Still, it was wonderful to be in the elements with good people doing what we love.
Book Signing this Weekend:
Local naturalist and author Ann Cooper will be at the store signing copies of her two new books on dragonflies; Dragonflies of the Colorado Front Range: A Photographic Guide and Dragonflies: Q & A Guide: Fascinating Facts About Their Life in the Wild. The signing will be held at the Wild Bird Center from 10:00 to Noon on Saturday December 13th. This will be a great opportunity to get a gift for yourself or a naturalist friend. If you know someone who is a birder, it's time to turn them into a dragonflier as well!

Bird of the Day December 6, 2014 Saturday Bird Walk
|
White-Breasted Nuthatch
Today was a "dartboard" selection day for Bird of the Day. We had many fun bird vignettes on the walk, but no dramatic climax or event that really stuck out. It could have been the northern shrike, Townsend's Solitaire, Cassin's Finch, black-capped chickadee, brown creeper, or even the mallards, but in the end I chose the white-breasted nuthatch for its close and always entertaining antics. Nuthatches and chickadees just make me happy.
