Sometimes on Saturday mornings we go looking for rare birds that have been previously reported, but this morning we found one of our own. We found a common tern in the northwest corner of Boulder Reservoir. This is a spot where arctic terns have appeared in years past so we deliberated for a while about which one this bird might be. A debate in the field is always a good way to learn more about the subtleties of identification. Just remember to look at the bird more than the books while it's around.

Rock Wren
The best show of the day (besides the kingfisher and phoebe battle) goes to the rock wren. We had several in the riprap along the dam and spillway at Boulder Reservoir. Rock wrens are cute compact birds which never spend a lot of time in one place. This usually means that I end up with many pictures of rear ends and places where birds used to be. In the slide show I've spared you the vacant images; however, there are still a few rear end shots.
