When we were assembling in the South Mesa Trail parking lot, I was struck by how quiet it was. It must have taken over a minute for me to hear my first bird sound. That is one reason August birding can be challenging. Now that nesting and defending territory is mostly over, the amount of song is reduced significantly. Listen for contact and flight notes. There are still great things to be seen, it's just that you have to work for them in August.
