A toasty mid-summer bird walk (like they're supposed to be) this morning. We went looking for orioles before they leave. We really wanted to find an orchard oriole, but were unsure if we saw one or not. However, we found a family group of Bullock's Orioles with the parents feeding the recently fledged young.

Note: Next week on the bird walk, July 26th, we will go on a bird and butterfly walk with local expert naturalist Jan Chu. The morning will start out mostly birds and then progress (as it gets hotter) to being mostly about butterflies. This will be a great natural history experience! We will leave the Wild Bird Center at the usual time of 7:30 am and return about 11:00 am. Call the Wild Bird Center if you have any questions: 303-442-1322.

Western Kingbird
You've heard that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Well, that is what happened with the Bird of the Day today. The squeaky bird got the distinction of Bird of the Day. Both kingbirds were with us at many times during the walk and one could make an argument for either or another bird to be Bird of the Day. We saw a family group of western kingbirds very early on in the walk and that image stayed with us.
