Sunny, warm, but with a cool breeze. 65°F. 2-8 mph. 18 participants.

We headed up to Sage Trail on the western side of Boulder Valley Ranch Open Space today. This is the same area where I photographed the bull snake and flicker last week. This is a great place in the spring and early summer because it has a boundary between a riparian area and a grassland. Every good birder knows that habitat boundaries are great places to look for birds.

Summer Tanager
I did not get a great look at the summer tanager, but it was long enough to see that it was a large all-red tanager without darker wings and cheeks (auriculars) like a hepatic. It also had a round light-gray beak. Summer tanager is North America's only all red bird. I heard the tanager's sweet grosbeak-like song several times before I saw it. Included in the slide show is a distant view of the tanager taken by Jack Klase. Thanks Jack.
