I had three "target" species for this morning's walk. We got great looks at one, I thought I heard another, and the third there was no trace of. Combined with all the other birds we saw, I think we did well. The two birds we dipped on were rose-breasted grosbeak and little blue heron. There is always something excited to find when you're a bird watcher.

Black Phoebe
In the recent past, Eastern Phoebes have found their way to Boulder County and are now seemingly comfortable and here to stay. Today, we watched a black phoebe hunting and perching and acting like it's on territory. It made a few trips under the 75th Street Bridge which might indicate that it is or was nest building under there. This section of the creek path is closed so we were unable to investigate. Black phoebes are a southwestern species which are always around water. Pete Dunne calls them the aqua phoebe because of its affinity for water.
