All the birds are getting down to the business of nesting. Lots of song and territorial battling to usher in my second favorite birding month. June is the best time to learn bird songs. Everything is singing which can make it a little confusing, but just focus on one or two of the most prominent songs and you will slowly build your repertoire.

Note: On Thursday of this week I witnessed something dramatic out on Sage Trail. A bull snake had climbed about twenty feet up in a tree and was about to enter a flicker hole. The male flicker was nearby and understandably agitated. The snake proceeded to enter the hole and the flicker stayed nearby trying to ward off the snake by drumming and flying around. At no time did the flicker peck at the snake. With half of its body in the hole, I thought the flicker could strike the snake without fear of counter-attach. Finally, the entire four foot snake entered the hole. The flicker still tried to get the snake to leave, but now the snake was striking at the snake when it came close to the hole. The following images may be upsetting so click at your own risk.

Yellow-Breasted Chat
Out of sheer song volume and frequency we chose the yellow-breasted chat as Bird of the Day. Skunk Canyon has always been a great place to see and hear chats. Seeing a chat can sometimes be a challenge, but we were afforded a few good viewing opportunities. Listen to the following links to hear the crazy sounds and variety of yellow-breasted chat vocalizations.
