March 15, 2014
Cloudy and breezy. 35°F. 5-20 mph. 12 participants.

Beware the Ides of March! The stabbing winds that sneak up on you. Most of the participants this morning had not been warned by the Oracle of the impending chill. In the end, only a few survivors remained in the group while the rest had fallen. It seems that for most of the winter we have alternated every other week being harsh weather and the other being beautiful. Today we got the harsh one.

Bird of the Day March 15, 2014 Saturday Bird Walk
|
Cinnamon Teal
Cinnamon Teal
Cinnamon teal are an uncommon, but regular visitors for us which are always a thrill to see. The males' deep brick-red color, orange-red eye, and gold tertial feathers are striking. Photographic conditions were poor this morning, but my image does show the pair of teal gliding behind the cattails. Other candidates for the Bird of the Day this morning included mourning dove, killdeer, and the marsh wren (which we never saw). Cornell Lab of Ornithology, All About Birds BirdFellow Cinnamon Teal
