Our day of slush yesterday gave way to a beautiful spring-like morning. We started frozen and ended up with the trees raining off their icy coats.  Look for the bluebirds coming through in the next few weeks!

Red-Winged Blackbird
We did not see a great number of birds today, but at all the places we visited there were birds singing. One of those singing birds was the red-winged blackbird. The song of a red-wing is quintessential spring. I would bet that even non-birders associate the song of a red-winged blackbird with spring. Not all of our red-wings have returned, but the few that are here are setting up territories and announcing them with song. On these warm days of late winter, get out to your local patch of cattails to see and hear the red-winged blackbirds ushering in spring.
