This is the time of year when the water swings back and forth between frozen and open. Today we had open water and lots of waterfowl. On the slide show note the red-winged blackbird not showing its red shoulders and the bald eagle next to its nest. This nest is on a farm to the east of Union Reservoir-one that I did not know about until today. Go eagles! Also, read about the wild ride of our Bird of the Day.

Bird of the Day February 22, 2014 Saturday Bird Walk
|
Golden Eagle & Bald Eagle
Golden Eagle
When we drove up Gunbarrel Hill on Lookout Rd. we saw a golden eagle perched in a tree, but it was not a good place to turn out. We stopped on top of the hill and saw a second golden soaring. While we were watching it a red-tailed hawk stooped several times trying to drive off the eagle (see slide show). The hawk gave up and headed out. After a while, the wind came up and the golden started doing its roller coaster display where it stoops, pulls up, and then repeats (see slide show). Then an immature bald eagle came over to the golden and took a few swipes of its own just like the red-tail had done. One so-so image that I got is of the eagles close together staring the other down (see slide show).
