January 18, 2014.   Sunny and warm. 50°F. 0-3 mph.

A beautiful morning. We saw lots of raptors and waterfowl, but not a lot else. Very typical of a warm January morning. It was so pleasant, in fact, that both the hooded mergansers and the mallards were engaging in courtship behaviors.

Hooded Merganser
I think that hooded mergansers are one of the most beautiful birds. That chestnut offset by the black and white-very classy. We had several males displaying at Boulder Reservoir by throwing their heads back, bobbing them up and down, and making short runs at each other.
