The flood waters are receding, but many creeks are still over their banks. We spent some time along South Boulder Creek this morning and it is running fast and overflowing. Many of the usual birds were not around like song sparrows and downy woodpeckers. Was it the flooding or just coincidence?

Note: Next week (Sept 28) we will have our annual Raptor Watch during the Saturday Bird Walk Time. We will be travelling to Rabbit Mountain where we will sit and let the raptors fly over. Meet by 7:30 am at the Wild Bird Center to carpool or meet us about 7:50 at Rabbit Mountain. If Open Space is still closed next Saturday, I will email a new plan on Friday.

Bird of the Day
September 21, 2013 Saturday Bird Walk

Orange-Crowned Warbler
Painting by Louis Agassiz Fuertes
Orange-Crowned Warbler
Pete Dunne calls the orange-crowned warbler the "knee-high warbler" for its habit of foraging so close to the ground in dense underbrush. The pair we saw this
morning was not knee-high, but they were moving around in the densest part of the tree. This made for some poor photographic opportunities so one of our Bird of the Day images is an orange-crowned warbler painting by the famous Louis Agassiz Fuertes. The birds did show themselves long enough for us to identify and enjoy them.
