It was a hot one this morning. Most of Enchanted Mesa was devoid of birds. Thankfully, it is a very pretty place. Take a virtual bird walk by viewing the slide show.

Broad-Tailed Hummingbird
I almost picked the sphinx moth (aka hummingbird moth) as our "bird" of the day because we saw one on the walk and I saw one at the Wild Bird Center and at home today. There must be an emergence of them right now. Anyway, the hummers put on quite a show thanks, in part, to a customer's feeder and wonderful
garden that was along our route. This high pressure system parked over us has given us hot weather and not very favorable winds for migration so we still have many hummers this late in the season. Don't worry, the cold front that is arriving soon should help give a push to the hummingbirds so they will be fine, but I'm always sad to see them go. We had one hummingbird that was spending a lot of time resting in leaves. I'm not sure if it was eating insects or looking for a bath?
