Bill Eeds led the "walk" this morning. Bill tried doing something a little different than our usual walk by having everyone participate in a "big sit". A big sit is where you stay stationary and let the birds come to you. It can be a great method for seeing things you don't see when you bird watch by moving (and disturbing as you go) through an environment. Thanks Bill..

Bird of the Day
August 31, 2013 Saturday Bird Walk

Blue Jay
 İSteve Frye

Blue Jay
The Bird of the Day was chosen this week not so much for its rarity or abundance, but for its plumage. The blue jay seen on the walk this morning had molted all of its head feathers and appears rather bizarre.  Many blue jays molt all of their head feathers in the late summer and early fall in this way. I refer to them as vulturine jays when they are in this state. I have heard many theories about this molt strategy ranging from disease, infestation, to that's just the way some jays molt. I really don't know which is correct. For me, it just looks cooler and that is enough in these dog days of summer.
