After the last few weeks, I'm not used to the kind of sun and heat we had on today's walk. I'll have to start wearing my hat again. We had a great morning with many first of the year (FOY) birds for people. We saw a loon and 4 grebe species, so I guess it was a good day for piscivores. Thanks again to photographers Neal Zaun and Carolyn Beach for today's images.

Bird of the Day
April 27, 2013 Saturday Bird Walk

Yellow-Rumped Warbler

 ŠSteve Frye

Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Warblers are known as the jewels of the bird world. And for me, these gems stole the show. The rarest bird we saw today was a common loon and we had other great looks at horned grebe and yellow-headed blackbirds, but my vote went to tiniest birds of the morning. You'll notice from the slideshow that we saw both subspecies (or races) of the yellow-rumped warbler this morning. The "myrtle" subspecies has a white throat and the "Audubon" subspecies has a yellow throat.
