Sunny and cool turning pleasant. 30-45°F. 0-3 mph. 16 participants.
binoculars and child We travelled to Walden Ponds this morning hoping to catch a glimpse of the fox sparrow that has been reported there. We got skunked on the fox, but it was great to be out on one of the shortest days of the year. Our bird of the day would be the mink we saw at Cottonwood Marsh, if it wasn't a mammal. Happy Holidays and good birding to all!

Northern Shrike

Two magpies alerted
us to the shrike this morning. I'm not sure if they were there to harass the shrike, certainly the shrike poses no threat to the magpies. Magpies are 2 ½ times heavier than northern shrikes. Anyway, it was nice of them to point out our bird of the day.

Birds need fat to burn in order to keep warm in the winter. What's better than eating pure fat? For the birds, anyway, it's a great food which gives them needed energy.
