Cloudy, breezy, and cool. 25°F. 2-6 mph. 7 participants.
binoculars and child The National Audubon Society will hold its annual Christmas Bird Count in Boulder tomorrow. Former Wild Bird Center Staffer and friend Scott Severs covers the Teller Farms area during the counts so we previewed his area for the bird walk this morning. It was a little slow especially to start out because of the cold and darkness, but it did pick up at the end. The big pond near Valmont is dry and there were lots of gulls feasting on the dead fish. Also, two wounded geese flew into the dry pond after hearing a barrage of gunfire, but I don't think they are leaving. Should be good eagle chow.

Merlin

What an awful day for photography! Anyway, it was fun to see the merlin through the scopes. My photo does not do this beautiful small falcon justice.

Birds need fat to burn in order to keep warm in the winter. What's better than eating pure fat? For the birds, anyway, it's a great food which gives them needed energy.
