October 27, 2012  Sunny and cool. 30°F. 2-5 mph. 5 participants.

binoculars and childI had originally planned on bird watching in cemeteries on this Saturday before Halloween. However, some surf scoters had been reported at Union Reservoir so we went chasing them. We saw some great birds, but no scoters. And I did take my group to a cemetery at Ryssby Church on the way back to the store.

Bald Eagle
Western Grebes might have been the bird of the day because we saw so many, but the eagles were who put on a show. Three of the eagles were trying to catch coots on Jim Hamm Pond. They went back and forth over the pond for several minutes trying to snatch a coot from the surface. Of course the coots were diving to get away. I have seen this scenario play out several times between eagles and coots. Eagles target the coots over the ducks perhaps because they are easier to catch or they taste like fish? Thanks to Edie Israel for some of the images from today's walk.
