SEVENTH-GAY ADVENTISTS
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities have become mainstream in the world and in churches across America. Just this morning, various news agencies reported that Anglican leaders of the 85 million-member denomination (third largest in the world) have temporarily restricted the role of the U.S. Episcopal Church in their global fellowship as a sanction over the American church's acceptance of gay marriage. A majority of their leaders hold the deepest opposition to gay relationships as a violation of Scripture.
There are growing numbers of gay pastors, priests, bishops, elders, and church officials announcing their homosexual identities, and major religious denominations are dividing over the controversy. We are living in an era where "Gay Christians" are standing in the pulpit with Bibles in their hands, and the first SDA transgender elder is teaching Sabbath School lessons before the main service.
On December 12, "The Hollywood Seventh-dayAdventist Church conducted an interview celebrating another type of change, namely going from male to female. "Kirsten Salvador who interviewed 'Rhonda Dinwiddie', announced that Rhonda is now an elder at Hollywood SDA church, and a full time Sabbath School teacher. Among Rhonda's interests are the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement, women's ordination, and the movie Seventh-gay Adventists. 'Rhonda' claims that the Akers movie Seventh-gay Adventists was a life-changing experience, and paved the way for him/her to join the Hollywood Adventist Church.
"This is an unprecedented move within the Seventh-day Adventist movement. One wonders if the recent 21-page document released by Andrews Seminary paves the way for this kind of gender confusion to be welcomed into the church," she said. (Fulcrum News, January. 9, 2016).
The 21-page document was voted on and passed by Andrew's Theological Seminary on October 9, 2015. The paper is titled:
An Understanding of the Biblical View on Homosexual Practice and Pastoral Care.
The seminary position paper includes the following statements:
1. "Scripture condemns heterosexual immorality no less than homosexual practice and warns against any harboring of lustful thoughts and desires for such practices. While homosexuality is a distortion of the Edenic ideal, 'there is no condemnation' for homosexually oriented persons as long as they 'are in Christ Jesus' (Rom 8:1) and do not harbor or act upon their orientation and propensities. ... One is not culpable [guilty] for these involuntary tendencies, but for acting upon them either in imagination or actual practice" (pp. 3, 4).
2. "In Matthew 19:12, Jesus refers to three specific categories of people: (1) eunuchs by birth; (2) eunuchs made by man; (3) eunuchs by personal choice. While this passage does not explicitly refer to homosexuality, it does reveal that the Bible recognizes that some sexual departure from the norm can be inherited, acquired, or chosen"(p. 4).
3. "It should be emphasized, however, that the biblical materials condemn homosexual practice, but there is no castigation of innate homosexual orientation per se" (p. 14).
4. "If I accept myself as a gay or lesbian person, do I have a place in the Church? We are a Church made up of sinners saved by grace with love as its foundation (Matt 22:36-40) and such love should be shown equally to all members. Gay and lesbian members who choose to, and remain abstinent should be given the opportunity to participate in all church activities including leadership positions in the Church" (p. 17).
5. "We strongly affirm that homosexual persons have a place in the Seventh-day Adventist Church" (p. 18). Full 21-page document
We should welcome all people in our churches and extend a hand of love. But, I have a question: Would you agree or disagree that Rhonda, according to the position taken by the Andrews Seminary scholars at the flagship institute of Seventh-day Adventists, has every right to hold office in the Seventh-day Adventist Church as long as she is not a "practicing" homosexual (transgender in this case) or harboring any lustful thoughts or desires for such practices? What about gay men who abstain from homosexual thoughts and deeds who want to be pastors? The way things are going in the SDA church, it may not be long before certain unions and churches permit "non practicing" gays and lesbians to be pastors. Rhonda is just the beginning.
Let us now look at statements from an article written by Dr. Samuel Koranteng-Pipim, former Director, Public Campus Ministries, Michigan Conference.
SOME POPULAR ARGUMENTS FOR HOMOSEXUALITY
(The Facts & the Myths: Are they Biblically Valid?)

"This argument is meaningless, if not misleading. Is homosexuality something you are, like being black or elderly or handicapped or female, or is it something you do, like adultery or incest or lying? This question goes to the heart of the pro-homosexual statement that "there is a difference between being a homosexual and practicing homosexuality." In order for the pro-gay argument to be valid, one must assume that homosexuality is not a sin. On the other hand, if homosexuality is a sin, as the Bible teaches, then the distinction between being a homosexual and practicing homosexuality is artificial and invalid. ...
"Second, the distinction between orientation and practice--the former being morally neutral and the latter morally wrong--also raises theological and ethical questions. Does the universal sinfulness of all humanity and the fact that they are born with weakness and tendencies to evil (Ps 51:5; 143:2; cf. 14:3; 1 Kings 8:46; Pro 20:9; Rom 3:23; 7:14-24; 1 John 1:8) allow one to suggest that this sinful tendency or propensity is morally neutral, and therefore, not a sin to be repented of or overcome by the power of Christ (Rom 7:25; 8:1; Eph 2:1-10; John 1:13; 3:5; 2 Cor 5:17)? ...
" Another variation of the previous pro-gay argument is the belief that being a homosexual is not a sin. In the view of proponents, the condition of homosexuality is not a sin. Therefore, in the words of one Adventist scholar, 'homosexuals can be genuine, model Christians.' They do not consider it an oxymoron to speak about a gay Christian or a gay Adventist. For in their view, individuals can be a non-practicing homosexual when they choose to be "celibate homosexuals" (Full article)
Like the SDA church, "the Catholic Church has become more open to welcoming the LGBT community. 'If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?' Two years ago, Pope Francis uttered these words, sending shockwaves throughout the Catholic Church and the world. His position stood in contrast to that of his predecessors: Months earlier, Pope Benedict XVI suggested that gay marriage was a threat to global peace.
"Under the leadership of Pope Francis, the Catholic Church is evolving on LGBT issues. As theologian David Cloutier has noted, the process isn't political, it's spiritual. The church is beginning to discern more deeply the full measure of God's presence in LGBT individuals and, yes, couples, too. There have been five notable moments in this evolution. Brazilian Cardinal Cl�udio Hummes, said he 'didn't know whether Jesus would oppose gay marriages" (Time, July 28, 2015). Under "comments", one man challenged the Pope and said: "The bigger problem with religious condemnation of LGBT people is that it's really impossible to separate the 'gayness' from the person."
Not only is the Pope calling for peace and tolerance in LBGT matters, but he recently released his first video message to the world calling for peace and unity amongst all religions--Buddhist, Jewish, Catholic, and Muslim (video below). The high-quality video shows the different representatives from the different religions uniting together in love.
Dear reader, Bible prophecy declares in the Book of Revelation that there will be a one-world religion before the second coming of Jesus Christ. As the religions of the world respond to the appeal of Pope Francis for a union based upon the common ground of love, the same sentiment will follow and an appeal will be made in the United States of America among Protestant denominations. Last night, I watched a message from Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, calling for unity in love as well. The Muslim leader said: "Look at the last commandment that Jesus gave, we are to love one another even as I have loved you. Lets gather together and love one another." Inspirations says: "The wide diversity of belief in the Protestant churches is regarded by many as decisive proof that no effort to secure a forced uniformity can ever be made. But there has been for years, in churches of the Protestant faith, a strong and growing sentiment in favor of a union based upon common points of doctrine. To secure such a union, the discussion of subjects upon which all were not agreed--however important they might be from a Bible standpoint--must necessarily be waived" (GC 442).
While researching for this article, I came across the following information while searching the writings of Ellen G. White:
THE 1977 ANNUAL COUNCIL OF THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH VOTED THAT "GROSS SEXUAL PERVERSIONS, INCLUDING HOMOSEXUAL PRACTICES, ARE RECOGNIZED AS A MISUSE OF SEXUAL POWERS AND A VIOLATION OF THE DIVINE INTENTION IN MARRIAGE. AS SUCH THEY ARE JUST CAUSE FOR DIVORCE." (GENERAL ACTIONS, P. 10).
REASONS FOR WHICH A PERSON MAY BE DISFELLOWSHIPPED FROM THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH INCLUDE "HOMOSEXUAL PRACTICE AND OTHER PERVERSIONS." [SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH MANUAL (REVISED 1986), P. 162.].
Where do you draw the line, friend? Is it permissible in the church for two gay males or two gay females to date or kiss, as in a relationship, while sexual intimacy like intercourse is prohibited? Is a "Gay Christian" man French-kissing another "Gay Christian" man considered a homosexual practice or perversion by the church? If you believe either of the questions above qualifies as a homosexual practice or perversion, then according to the 1977 Annual Council the persons involved should be disfellowshipped. In the meantime, a homosexual or transgender who was born a man, like Ron, can hold office and become an elder while living as a woman named Rhonda. So why not employ SDA non-practicing gay pastors? I believe gay pastors are around the corner. After all, other gay pastors already hold positions in Lutheran, Presbyterian, and denominations. And how will the SDA church handle gay marriages?
How long before the SDA Church accepts homosexual couples and allows one or both of them to hold office? Sex is permissible, in marriage, right, in all 50 states based on Scotus' landmark same-sex decision, even though Leviticus 20:13 says: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Will the SDA church be charged with sexual discrimination if they refuse to employ gay pastors? Does the church risk losing its 501c3 status if it refuses to marry two homosexuals? Does the church screen homosexuals in regards to their sexual activities before appointing them into church leadership? Is not an elder to be "blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly" (Titus 1:6).
Is allowing homosexuals to hold office in the SDA church a compromise that opens the door for more compromise in the future?Consider Deuteronomy 22:5: "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God." Not only is Ron or Rhonda wearing women's clothing, a woman's hair style, woman's jewelry, and women's shoes, she professes to be a woman. Is this an even greater abomination in the sight of God?
How do you interpret Romans 1:25-28? "For even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet."
Webster's Dictionary defines "homosexual" as someone who is "sexually attracted to people of the same sex." The apostle Paul says that is against nature? or the "natural use" which God ordained solely between a man and a woman, as with Adam and Eve? Wasn't it God's design to bless and multiply the man and wife through the gift of birthing children? Sodomy is an abomination unto the Lord.
What I do not understand is why the church is moving in this direction, right before the close of probation. What the church is saying is that you can be a homosexual or transgender as long as you do not entertain lustful homosexual thoughts or engage in homosexual acts. But will the same church continue to forbid same sex marriage? Isn't that unkind and unfair to the homosexual that wants to marry and engage in legal sexual intimacy with a loving partner?
Friend, are you aware of progressive theology in our institutions, universities, and churches? Has God changed since 1844? It is interesting that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is moving in the same direction as the Catholic church and some apostate Protestant churches. The GOP and Seventh-day Adventist candidate that is running for president, Dr. Ben Carson, stated that homosexuality is absolutely a choice. "They go into prison and come out gay. Some of our brightest minds have looked at this debate, and up until this point there have been no definitive studies that people are born into a specific sexuality," he said. "Previously he's aligned homosexuality with beastiality, pedophelia, and murder. With a majority of Americans supporting gay marriage, fielding a republican candidate that is so blatantly hostile to homosexuality is a great way to send swing voters packing" (MSNBC, March 4, 2015). But after his ratings dropped, the renowned neurosurgeon gave an apology rather quickly. The Seventh-day Adventist doctor said in Pope Francis-like rhetoric: "I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended," he added. "In a radio interview with Sean Hannity, Carson then said he won't be talking about gay rights anymore 'because every time I'm gaining momentum, the liberal press says, let's talk about gay rights--and I'm just not going to fall for that anymore'" (CNN, March 5, 2015). One disheartened bisexual wrote:
Dr. Ben Carson,
I'm a bisexual Seventh-day Adventist, and I currently attend the Seventh-day Adventist Church flagship institution, Andrews University. I want you to know that LGBT people are human. We are not a theoretical subject you can wish away with traditional theological arguments (and it would be helpful to remember that not everyone--even within the Seventh-day Adventist Church--believes that committed same-sex relationships are sinful). Some of us LGBT folks are also Christian, and yes, even Seventh-day Adventist Christians. The things you have said about us are far from Christ-like, and they're actually downright inflammatory. Seventh-Gay Adventists: A Film About Faith on the Margins, SDA Kinship International, the Intercollegiate Adventist GSA Coalition, We are SDAs, Carrol Grady's book My Son, Beloved Stanger--these are all resources where you can learn more and listen to LGBT people who are both queer and Seventh-day Adventist. I myself have written about the intersection of religion and sexuality (contextually within the SDA church) for almost three years.
We have voices, and we're not going anywhere. Our church is changing.
Changing it is. But the good news is that God's grace is powerful enough to change a gay person into a straight person, the way the Creator made us. Jesus said: "With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible" (Mark 10:27). If you have sexual thoughts or actions towards one of your own gender, God can change you. He loves you so much He won't leave you a homosexual or transgender if you seek Him with your whole heart.
Before I met the Lord, I had a drinking problem. But as the Holy Spirit awaked my soul, I called out to the Lord. I confessed my sin, and repented and He quickened me. I was transformed by the grace and power of God into a new creature. Old things passed away; and behold, all things are become new (see 2 Cor. 5:17).
Today, I do not tell people I am an alcoholic, I tell them I was an alcoholic. Likewise, a gay or transgender person, by the grace and power of God, can be changed completely, just as I was, and say, "I was a homosexual." Praise God Who makes all things new.
