DIVINE FORGIVENESS
The new year is here. Have you thought about what changes you want to make for 2016? Perhaps you want to make some dietary changes or a commitment to study the Bible more. Perhaps, you have unsettled relationship issues that need healing. Maybe there is someone you need to forgive who hurt you.
If you are human, then you know what I am talking about. It is not easy being human, born with a sinful nature. All of us have  experienced emotional pain. We all have been hurt and have hurt others. We all have a painful story. We, too often, rehearse the past or spend too many hours worrying about the future, waiting for something to change.
First, we need to understand that we cannot change anyone, not even ourselves. We cannot fix another person. It is easy to see the faults of others, perhaps our spouse's, but difficult to see our own defects of character. We blame, shame, criticize, and hurt the ones we love, when most of the time our reactions or outbursts are triggered from our own internal pain.
A psychologist once told me: "Work on yourself. Work on your own choices." "True, we cannot change ourselves; but the power of choice is ours, and it rests with us to determine what we will become" (COL 56).
We may not be able to change ourselves, but we can choose what we will become. In fact, the person you are today is the sum total of the choices you have made throughout your lifetime. There are so many self help books available, but their is only ONE book that provides the true solution to our human dilemma--the one true remedy to deliver us from our human limitations and enable us to "become" new. The divine prescription is a promise found in the Word of God. The Bible says: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Cor. 5:17).
We can try to change all we want. But not until we are willing to make the choice to surrender our hearts fully to God and cry out for the power outside and above us that only He can provide, will we ever succeed in changing any bad habit or defect of character. We will continue to blame others and hold onto bitterness. The Bible says: "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil" (Jer. 12:23). But thank God for His promises. One of my favorite is the following: "With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible" (Mark 10:27).
Let's look at bitterness for a minute. If you have any bitterness or anger, then you have unforgiveness. One of the hardest things in life is to forgive someone who has hurt you, especially if the person is not sorry for what he or she did. You can stay bitter, try to block the  pain out of your mind, or self-medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb it, but there is only one solution that really works and it is free for the choosing. Ask God for divine forgiveness and a new heart. Pray He will provide the godly forgiveness that only He can give. The Holy Spirit will soften your hearts and help you separate the sin from the sinner-- to hate the one but love the other just as Christ did. Jesus loved us so much that He died on the cross for each one of us while we were yet sinners (John 3:16; Romans 5:8-10). Sometimes we have to forgive those that are yet sinners too. Give them to the Lord. He is the only One that can fix them. Release them to the Lord right now.

Remember, forgiveness does not set the other person free, it sets you free from the bondage of bitterness. Forgiveness is your key to freedom.
