Dear Friend, Fifteen years ago, I did a 21-day juice fast and felt fabulous. For the first 11 days I craved only fresh citrus from my own organic trees. Ruby Red Grapefruits, Blood Oranges (love the red color), Tangerines, Yellow Grapefruits, and Valencia Oranges were my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For the last 10 days, I juiced lots of different colored vegetables which gave me added vitamins, minerals, and protein. Today, I am on day 20 of another juice fast. I started this fast weighing 185 pounds and today I am 168 and have lost 17 lbs. in just 20 days. The fast has been very easy this time. There are days I feel weak, but the juices pick me right up. In fact, most days I go to the gym and play racquetball and work out with weights. I notice less endurance as I get deeper into the fast, so I pace myself and take the necessary precautions. My mind is crystal clear which is awesome! I am concentrating on vegetables this fast, but adding a some apples, hard pears, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, jalape�o, and bell peppers from time to time. Daily, I am taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of organic flaxseed oil (essential fatty acids) and 25 grams of hemp protein powder (essential amino acids) in my juices to avoid muscle loss. Try using the hemp powder in a just carrot and celery juice because it will be easier to stomach. I am using a Breville BJE510XL Juice Fountain Multi-Speed 900-Watt Juicer I bought off Amazon ($194.00). It is very fast and easy to clean. It juices all kinds of greens which made it attractive to me. The amount I drink at a time may vary. I drink 12 oz. to 32 oz. depending on my need. Usually hunger slows down as you advance in the fast. I notice by day 4 or 7, my body does not desire food like it did. This actually helps me to keep going. But do not skip juices. Spread them out every two to four hours for best results. If you drink one every two hours then take 12 to 20 oz. at a time. If you drink only three a day, then try larger amounts. I take the hemp protein in the morning before my workout and in the evening because it helps hold me through the night by eliminating hunger pains. At night, I can feel the fat burning off my stomach as I sleep. In the morning I need that first juice to give me fuel to get going. I use organic produce exclusively while fasting. If you cannot get organic fruits and vegetables then do the best you can. I am avoiding most fruits because I want to keep the sugar intake low. I have gone from a size 34 waist to a 32. As an ex-competitive bodybuilder, I know how to trim and tone my stomach quickly, and fasting gets me the desired results in a couple weeks or less. What you want to remember is to get creative while fasting. For breakfast, I juice a couple apples (green ones have less sugar), carrots, beets, kale, basil, cilantro, parsley, tomatoes, celery, and ginger (optional). I add a tablespoon of flaxseed oil to the mix. I like adding a jalape�o pepper on occasion for a pinch of heat. For lunch I may use the same vegetables or add red cabbage, eggplant, zucchini, or chard. It depends on what I have growing in the garden. You will not taste the eggplant or squash if you blend it with the other vegetables and use fresh ginger. The ginger helps make the juice more palatable for those of you who like its flavor. I love fresh-picked tomatoes in my juice. Make one juice with only tomatoes and some basil (yummy), or have carrot, celery, and parsley. There are no rules, but I like to get a variety of vitamins and minerals from the different vegetables so rotate blends. Last night, I used tomatoes, carrots, celery, cilantro, parsley, ginger, and red leaf lettuce. The night before, I added a bunch of arugula or salad rocket (not my favorite in juices) because we had a pack of it in the fridge that needed to be used. Salad rocket has a high oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC), a measure of anti-oxidant strength. Juices are nutrient powerhouses! They build the body and the blood. They are healers because they help the body detoxify and cleanse. Dr. Hagiwara, the inventor of BarleyGreen, said: "The green blood of plants builds red blood in humans." Green juices help eliminate anemia. The chlorophyll is a wonderful blood-builder. Think green! Cilantro helps remove heavy metals; broccoli contains sulfurophane to fight cancer; celery is high in organic sodium that helps arthritis and gastritis; and green leafy vegetables like chard and kale are a rich source of minerals including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium and vitamins, including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age-related problems. Ginger is a natural Cox-2 inhibitor and will help with inflammation. Spiritually, fasting and prayer is a great time to draw closer to God and hear His voice. I am fasting for several reason: 1) To get closer to God; 2) Because I have family who need God's help; 3) To get my weight lower and my stomach flatter; 4) For discipline and victory over appetite.
