of AIDS and Ebola
Dear Friend, We are living in perilous times. Today I am sitting in my hotel room in Rapid City, Michigan, attending the ASI 2014 convention. Yesterday, I read about the Ebola virus and the concern from men like Dr. Ben Carson regarding transporting infected people into the U.S. with this incurable disease. I later attended a Townhall meeting with SDA President Ted Wilson on Spiritual Formation and how it is infecting many churches, especially the youth. Let me start with Ebola. Years ago, at one of our Health Crusades, I invited Dr. Len Horowitz who is the author of the  Bestseller The Emerging Viruses - AIDS and Ebola. Ebola symptoms typically start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pains, and headache. Typically nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea follow, along with decreased functioning of the liver and kidneys. At this point, some people begin to have bleeding problems (Wikipedia). American patients with the disease are being transported from Africa to the U.S. for the first time. Many health professionals, besides Dr. Ben Carson, are concerned because the diesase, if not contained, could spread like the Bubonic plague or Black Death that swept through Europe in the 14th Century and killed an estimated 25 million people, or 30-60% of the European population. I have posted Dr. Len Horowitz's presentation (see below) and urge everyone to watch it immediately. PLEASE, friends, it is time to get in the best shape of your life by practicing God's Laws of Health, eating a plant food diet, juicing, cleansing, and having garlic and echinacea close by. But there is a another viral problem that is hitting churches, especially the Seventh-day Adventist church. President Ted Wilson addressed the crisis head-on at ASI yesterday. He warned against any spiritual exercises that are focused on contemplative prayer exercises, specifically meditating and emptying your mind. I attended another special meeting yesterday exposing the dangers of Spiritual Formation and the Emerging Church. Leaders  gathered together and were alarmed at the speed in which our colleges, theologians, and pastors are embracing the "new movement." The speakers exposed names of pastors that were heading out in the "One Project", like Sam Leonor, who is a key speaker at Forever Faithful International Pathfinder Camporee in OshKosh 2014. Sam Leonor (left) has been chosen to be the nightly program speaker this year at OshKosh. Leonor is the Pastor for the La Sierra University students and faculty. Sam Leonor concerns many SDA's because he leads audiences in "an ancient Christian discipline." Sam is one pastor who is introducing people to corporate contemplative practices such as lectio divina and centering prayer, and to experimental prayer rooms like the ones set up to pray through the different stations of the Cross. Lectio Divina (Latin for divine reading) is a traditional Benedictine practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God's Word. Traditionally Lectio Divina has 4 separate steps: read, meditate, pray and contemplate. First a passage of Scripture is read, then its meaning is reflected upon. This is followed by prayer and contemplation on the Word of God.
The roots of Scriptural reflection and interpretation go back to Origen in the 3rd century, after whom St. Ambrose taught them  to St. Augustine. The monastic practice of Lectio Divina was first established in the 6th century by Saint Benedict and was then formalized as a 4 step process by the Carth-usian monk, Guido II, in the 12th century. In the 20th century, the constitution Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council recommended Lectio Divina for the general public. Pope Benedict XVI emphasized the importance of Lectio Divina in the 21st century.
