Victory Over Appetite
and Binge-Eating
Greetings!
An obese woman named Betty walked into my office the other day and said: "Danny, can I please talk to you in private about my health problems?" The anxious and heavy woman told me that she was having problems with her weight and with diarrhea for over 20 years. "The doctors have not helped me at all," she said, "They have run every type of test on me, including a colonoscopy, and can't find out what might be causing the diarrhea."
Can you imagine a 250 lb. woman with diarrhea for 20 years? My heart went out to the poor lady, who was very weak and depressed. "Danny, I just needed to talk to someone, and I believe you can help me more than any doctor. All he wants to do is give me more drugs and run more tests. All my tests have been normal," she said, "Would you please help me?"
I asked Betty if there was something she might be eating that could be triggering the diarrhea, like an allergic reaction? "I get diarrhea when I eat wedding cake, drink iced tea with Splenda, diet cokes, or eat mayonnaise," she said. "My diet is pretty good. I just can't figure out why I have diarrhea."
I said to myself, "Are you kidding me?" "Betty," I said, "Those foods would give me diarrhea!--artificial sweeteners like aspartame, loads of sugar, and all that the fat and dairy." I told her that her diarrhea could also be caused from an allergic reaction to gluten, like in the wedding cake. She was all ears!
I kindly pointed out that she probably had been eaten the wrong foods for most of her life, and bingeing was part of her routine. Obviously, she had not put on the two-hundred-plus pounds by eating moderately of the natural foods of the earth. Like many others I meet, she thought her diet was "good".
Being gluten intolerant myself, I am always suspicious that diarrhea may be due to an allergic reaction--especially to wheat, gluten, or dairy. When a person is suffering with diarrhea, allergy is highly suspect. In this case, Betty was eating too many processed, junk foods that are high in sugar, fat, and gluten. I also advised her to only eat whole plant foods from the garden and in their most natural state as possible, just like God gave them. I also advised her to read the book Celiac Disease by Dr. Peter Green
A gluten-free diet means abstaining entirely from all wheat, oats, rye, and barley, for at least two weeks to see if you improve. Betty was instructed to drink only pure water and absolutely no acid-forming, diet sodas that are loaded with excitotoxins (never mind the aluminum can, phosphoric acid, and carmel coloring). I also advised her to stop eating all processed foods like white spaghetti, white bread, white rice, and refined, white sugar. I advised her to cut down on salt and to substitute with Real or Celtic Salt, but to use them sparingly.
The now-hopeful woman was advised to eat only two meals a day, instead of three. The first meal at 8 or 9 A.M. and the second meal at 3 or 4 P.M., with only water in between. The two-meal-a-day plan is good for someone like Betty who suffers from obesity, overeating, and bingeing. The plan will help her to establish proper eating times and to avoid bingeing. The plan would help her gain self control while at the same time lose some weight. It will help her stomach get a much-needed rest from not having to work all day, and especially through the night, since the last meal was at 4:00 P.M. "Eat a good portion size of whole foods only at mealtime, and no snacking." I said, "Whatever you do, avoid all gluten."
I explained the eight laws of health and strongly advised Betty to start walking 5 days a week. Exercise will help circulation, digestion, depression, and weightloss. She was also told to pray throughout the day, asking God for power to have victory over her appetite. "Your weakness in the area of appetite is the devil's victory over you. He will cause you to fall into temptation and overcome you," I warned. "Flee to Jesus when the temptation starts in the mind, and quote Isaiah 59:19 right at the devil: 'When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.' It is Jesus' fight and He has already won the battle." I also shared James 4:7, 8, which says: 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.'"
Betty is a Bible teacher. I explained many things in regards to appetite from the Bible that she had never heard before. I showed her that temperance is a Bible doctrine, and that by eating the way she had been eating for the past twenty years, her fork and knife were killing her. I told her that the sixth commandment says: "Thou shalt not kill." Betty was eating her way to the grave, and the Holy Spirit sent her to Modern Manna to save her life. "Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit," I said, and we must learn to "glorify God in our body and in our spirit which are God's" (1 Cor. 6:19, 20). She was grateful that I spoke the truth in love.
I advised her to take digestive enzymes, probiotics, and psyllium husks twice a day (2 TBSP in a glass of water morning and night before bed). "Why would you give psyllium husks to someone with diarrhea," you may ask? The psyllium husks are mucilagenous--they absorb and hold water and can help the feces form into soft stools, thus, stopping the gushing diarrhea. I also showed Betty my favorite digestive enzyme formula called Digest Gold. It is from Enzymatica--a company that only specializes in enzymes. The enzymes can help her digest, assimilate her food better, and lose some weight. Probiotics have helped people eliminate diarrhea, unless the problem is due to gluten intolerance, a bacterial infection, or something worse.
I told Betty to follow the nutritional advice, and that we would know in a couple of weeks if the program is working. The gluten-free diet, the two-meal-a-day program of fresh fruits of fresh vegetables, beans, legumes (except soy), seeds and nuts, brown rice, quinoa, and gluten-free oats for grains, and water only as a beverage, should reveal if Betty was truly gluten intolerant. There are so many healthy gluten-free foods available at supermarkets and health food stores today that no one should have a problem eliminating the glutinous foods for a couple of weeks. I call this approach an elimination diet. All dairy products and glutinous foods are prohibited for the two weeks.
What usually happens is the diarrhea will stop in 1-3 days, a person will feel healthier and happier, have more energy, and the loss of electrolytes from the diarrhea stops, which could be the cause of fatigue. The simple elimination of the allergen foods for a couple of weeks can help someone improve in many unexpected ways. If you are suspicious of allergy-related problems, try eliminating everything, and start introducing foods low on the allergy scale-- one at a time. Start with a salad of just mixed greens. If you have no symptoms the next day, eat salad and green beans, several times if desired. Again, if there are no problems the following day, eat salad, green beans, and apples for breakfast. Continue adding low-allergy foods, each day, like peas, squash, celery, broccoli, and other vegetables, one at a time, and log your daily results. For protein, you can try brown rice only (brown rice bread is OK) for a couple of days. Be careful with grains since many people are sensitive and do not know it.
Avoid all gluten foods for a month, and then eat heavily of whole wheat bread for a few days, and see if you notice a difference. Remember, eat a lot of whole grain or whole wheat bread each day, as if you want to cause a reaction. If you have no problems then try introducing the other glutinous foods into your diet, like barley, rye, spelt, and regular oats. Soon you will learn what foods make you sick and what ones do not. I told Betty to come back in two weeks and report on her progress.
There are so many people like Betty who have little self control and easily overcome by appetite. If you are one of those struggling with appetite and/or bingeing, please read these two powerful statements that I hold dear to my heart:
1. Satan's "strongest hold on man is through the appetite, and this he seeks to stimulate in every possible way" (CD 150.
2. "The controlling power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan" (CD 59).
Please prayerfully read these two statements over again and again, and ask God for His power or grace to help you in your time of need. Believe in His word and memorize His promises. Certainly, Christ can heal your appetite and bingeing, for "nothing is too hard for the Lord."
Yes, friend, there is victory in Christ! Claim the promises: "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" (1 Cor. 10:13); "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13); and "Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me" (Ps. 50:15).
I pray this information will give you hope and help you feel better--even happier. Gluten intolerance now affects one in 133 people. You may want to read the book Celiac Disease also. Dr. Green is the Director of The Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. There are many secondary diseases and problems that are caused by Gluten Intolerance, according to Dr. Green's research. Since nutrients are not being absorbed properly, including B-12, symptoms may develop that are characteristic of another disease, when, in fact, the primary problem is Celiac or Gluten Intolerance. If you avoid the glutinous foods, many improvements may be noticed at once. In 90% of women with low energy, wheat has been the cause.
Aren't you glad you did not have to come all the way to Modern Manna for a nutritional appointment, but that I could come to you in this week's Elijah Prophecy. Share the message with friends and family.
Remember, I love you, and "wish above all things, that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospereth" (3 John 2).
Peace be with you,
Danny Vierra
