Happy Birthday America!

On the highways and byways of America, you can spot the familiar sight of U-Haul trucks and car carriers as military families make their summer trek to their new duty station. While this is a fun and exciting time, it is also important to take precautions to keep you, your family and your belongings safe. Check with your insurance company to make sure that the items you carry in your vehicles are covered en route. We have more tips for staying safe during your PCS as well information on how to handle your health insurance needs while you are in transition. If you have tips you would like to share with other military families, we would love to hear from you.

If you have rented or sold a home that you have advertised on MilitaryByOwner.com, we would appreciate your assistance in keeping our site up-to-date by changing the status of your ad. We have a video tutorial that will assist you, or you can reach us via emaillive chat or phone (866-604-9126). We are happy to be of assistance.

We continue to expand the resources on our site in an effort to make your next PCS move the easiest yet. Be sure to visit our blog for articles and downloads that will answer many of the pressing questions you may have about buying, selling or renting homes, as well as general relocation information. If you have a topic that you would like for us to cover, please do not hesitate to email us.

Networking with other military families is the best way to gain knowledge about your new duty station, ask for advice on renting, selling or buying homes and even finding creative ways to entertain kids during a pack out and cross-country trip. One of the best ways to connect is through social media platforms, so if you are on Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest, we would love to have you join in our discussion so that you can help other military families with your vast knowledge of living the military life.

I placed a couple of ads last year and was amazed how quickly I got responses. This site is useful for both renter and potential tenant. I rented my home to someone in Germany who was pleased he could "see" a home from so far away. I will definitely use this site for all of my vacancies.

Should You Buy a Home This PCS Season?

If your military family is grappling with the decision to buy or rent for your upcoming PCS, you are not alone. For a picture of what the PCS national housing market looks like, take note of the following:

  • Housing inventory is declining nationwide.

  • Commercial loans are tightening, so new construction options will be limited for the duration of the summer moving season. The National Association of Builders reported a decline in their monthly confidence index of builders, suggesting this may not improve in the coming months.

2 Reasons to Require More than a Firm Handshake!

Congratulations! You've made it through the process of prepping your house for photos, listing
your property on Military By Owner, screening inquiries from prospective tenants, showing your property for rent, and now someone who has toured your home has agreed to rent it. The guy is a friend of a friend at work, and you know his commander. Great! He let you know that his household goods have already arrived, and he's ready to move in tomorrow. He's in a bit of a hurry because he's been in town for a while now, and he needs to move in before he starts at his new assignment after the weekend. Not only are you eager to get of town and onto your own next assignment, but you can feel his sense of urgency, too.

Don't Miss Out on the Internet Age's Curb Appeal

Every so often when I ponder where the Air Force gods may send us next, I skim through house listings on Military By Owner, picturing myself in a house by the beach in Hawaii, in a spacious adobe-style home near Tucson, or spending less on a 3,000 square foot home near hill country in Texas than we do on our itty bitty townhouse-condo near the Pentagon. When I click through to inspect the photos, though, I find that I'm regularly disappointed. A photo of your dining table and a fuzzy picture of your bed-both items of furniture that are not included in the sale of most homes outside of the beach condo market-do not help me fully capture the vision of greener pastures that I sought in your home.
