Letter from the Editor
As our United States Navy celebrates their 238th birthday on October 13, 2013, we would like to thank our Sailors and Navy families for your service and dedication to this great nation. You certainly make America proud!
Fall has officially arrived and although this is typically the "off-season" for military moves, there are those that may be anticipating a winter move. Keep in mind that even in the colder months, MilitaryByOwner.com is a fantastic place to advertise your home For Sale or For Rent, or to find the perfect home at your next duty station. Speaking of fall and military housing, we are sharing our tips for Fall Home Maintenance in our Real Estate Corner this month. For military homeowners, it is a good idea to keep up on necessary maintenance, which will ensure an easier move come PCS season.
While PCS is an acronym for Permanent Change of Station, our creative Christy Shields came up with her own version during her latest PCS move. It is an experience we are certain everyone can relate to, so be sure to read our Featured Article for a new twist on PCS.
We are thrilled to be taking part in the Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., October 21-23, 2013. If you are attending this fantastic event, please stop by our booth #3553 and say "hello". The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is interested in hearing about the employment and educational challenges that military spouses face as a result of frequent relocation. Please take a moment to read more about the MilSpouseSurvey in our Military Life segment. Lend your voice and your story so that MOAA can advocate for all military spouses. We love to hear from our customers, so please reach out to us if we can be of any assistance to you. You can reach us via email, phone 866-604-9126, live chat, Facebook, Twitter (@militarybyowner), LinkedIn and Google+. We look forward to speaking with you! Permanent Change of Station = Probable Cause of Stress
By Christy Shields
MilitaryByOwner Staff Writer
Well, here I am, in the middle of my PCS move. My stuff is packed up and on its way to Alaska. It occurred to me early on in this process, that instead of the acronym PCS standing for Permanent Change of Station, maybe instead PCS should mean Probable Cause of Stress. With every PCS move I make, there are those folks that chime in and ask, "how hard can it be? ...The Army moves you right? ...So what's the big deal?". Pulease! Moving is tough, every time. I have to be honest though, even with the number of times I have PCS'd, this time around has been particularly stressful, and there have been a lot of 'firsts' along the way. While not my first time PCS'ing without my husband (which is hard in its own right) with this PCS move I'm a first time landlord, a first time car-seller, and a first time "empty nester". My family is now located in 4 different states! Good thing the world is a small place, right?

Fall Home Maintenance for Military Homeowners
Fall has officially arrived and while the number of military service members making a PCS move this time of year is lower than in the spring or summer; for military homeowners, this is an opportune time to complete home maintenance items which can pay dividends, particularly if military relocation is on the horizon.
- HVAC system - Inspect & Service:
Scheduling a service appointment for your HVAC system before you need it is essential to make sure the heat will be there when you need it. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations of trustworthy and reputable professionals.
- Fireplace/Chimney - Clean & Inspect:
Schedule to have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected before the cold nights arrive. Checking gas lines, potential obstructions and damper functions will keep you both safe and warm.

New #MilSpouseSurvey - Share the Challenges You Face Seeking Employment!
Military spouses face many challenges to both employment and career advancement as a result of the military lifestyle. The Military Spouse Employment Survey is hosted by The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). This imperative study will look at the employment pattern of all military spouses, especially related to their long-term career trajectories. We encourage all active duty, National Guard, reserve, veteran, and surviving spouses who are 18 years and older to participate by sharing their stories, experiences and lessons learned.
According to the 2010 Department of Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), there are approximately 725,877 spouses of Active Duty service members and approximately 413,295 spouses of Reserve and Guard members. In addition, it is estimated that there are more than 15 million veterans' spouses in the United States and over 5.8 million surviving spouses. By adding your voice, we can build a stronger foundation for military spouses' professional needs, identify any barriers to career development and share your stories with government officials, state, and federal policy makers in order to overcome obstacles and improve the quality of life for all military spouses, service members and their families.
The survey will open on September 16, 2013 and remain open for 30 days. This survey is completely anonymous, for research purposes and therefore completely voluntary. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
You can access the survey and additional information here: www.moaa.org/milspousesurvey
Please share this survey link with other military spouses in your community!
