Letter from the Editor

As we celebrate America's Independence this week, we would like to take a moment to recognize and thank our military members and their families for their service and sacrifice, for without you, we would not have the liberty and freedom that we treasure today. As we gather to enjoy parades, barbecues and firework displays on the 4th of July, we will pause to think of those that remain on distant shores and for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

We are still in the midst of PCS season and as military families enter into lease agreements, we thought this would be a good time to share some important questions that you may want to ask before you sign on the dotted line, which can be found in our Featured Article this month.

There has been a measurable increase in home prices across the country as the real estate market continues to rebound, but does this mean it is the right time to for you to sell?  We will help answer this difficult question in our Real Estate Corner segment.

Military families set an exceptional example when it comes to welcoming new neighbors, so we thought it would be fun to put together a few creative ideas for welcome gifts that any military family would appreciate, so be sure to read our Military Life article and follow our boards on Pinterest for more great ideas on PCSing, real estate photography and military life.

We love to talk with our customers, so if we can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to contact us. You can reach us via email, phone 866-604-9126, live chatFacebookTwitter (@militarybyowner), LinkedIn and Google+. We look forward to speaking with you!

Also, if you would like to share a testimonial of your experience advertising with MilitaryByOwner, we would love to hear from you.

Happy 4th of July!

Important Questions to Ask Before You Sign a Lease Agreement

While rank is a familiar component of military life, there seems to be an unspoken rank structure when it comes to securing military housing. While not obvious by the number of stripes worn on a sleeve or bars on a collar, the landlord/tenant relationship can often take on the same feeling. Tenants are anxious to find the perfect home and often feel at the mercy of a landlord, which for military families under strict time constraints can lead them to make unwanted concessions.

Take a deep breath and make sure that you have asked the right questions and covered your bases before you sign on the dotted line.

Is it the Right Time to Sell My House?

Military homeowners were hit particularly hard when the housing sector took a nosedive. Constant relocation makes it nearly impossible for military homeowners to wait for a full recovery of the housing market before selling their home.

But the outlook for the housing market is positive, as recently reported on ABC Wolrd News; houses prices have surged to their highest levels in 6 years.

A recent discussion with a potential military homebuyer revealed that the bidding wars prevalent before the housing bubble burst are resurfacing. "We have bid on 9 homes and have lost every one to a bid that was above the asking price", lamented Joe Scavo. "We are qualified buyers, but we can not afford to pay above what the bank is willing to lend, so we are in a bind and wondering how we will be able to compete with other buyers."

Creative Gifts to Welcome New Military Neighbors

There is an air of anticipation within military neighborhoods as moving vans appear, wondering who will move in next door or down the street. Will your new neighbors become life-long friends or just acquaintances?  One thing to be certain of, is the hand of friendship will be extended.  (Read our great tips on making new military friends.)

The military community is warm and welcoming to new neighbors or members of our unit because we all know the feeling that comes with relocating to a new duty station. Our service member has an instant connection the moment they check into their unit and inevitably will run into buddies they have come to know along the way, but for military spouses and children we have to put ourselves out there to meet new people and to adjust to our new surroundings.
