Tips for an Organized PCS Move

Monica Schaefer
MilitaryByOwner Advertising, Inc.

I am self-diagnosed sufferer of OCD, so when it comes time for a PCS move to a new duty station, my desire for organization kicks into overdrive.

Certainly I am not alone in the number of horror stories I could share about the chaos of items found deep inside brown boxes after a military relocation, however, I continue to strive for the perfectly organized move.

Junk Drawer

Admit it, you have one too! Don't all homes have a drawer that is packed with take-out menus, neighbors phone numbers, pens, pencils, erasers and scissors? The funny thing is, I feel like this is somehow orderly, meaning that everything in there has no other logical home. I would like to keep these items together, so "Gallon Ziploc, proceed to organize". That's right, the big box of gallon Ziploc bags are my OCD's best friend, as you can rest assured that everything you zip into that see-through plastic bag will be in the same place you left it when it makes it to the other side.

Tools for Researching Your New Neighborhood

While the golden rule of real estate; "location, location, location" may seem a bit shopworn, it is an element that bears special consideration when looking for homes for sale or for rent. However, the information age has broadened the parameters of what to look for in a home with good "location".

Military families are often limited in their search to areas that are close to their duty station, which can make finding the perfect area a bit more challenging.

TriWest, who has held the contract for this region for the past 16 year, lost the contract to UnitedHealth Military & Veterans Services in March 2012 after the Department of Defense asked for the submission of bids from other companies.

UnitedHealth Military & Veterans Services, a division of UnitedHealth Group, the largest private health plan, will now service nearly 3 million new members in the West region including, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota and parts of Texas and Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
