Letter from the Editor
Happy New Year! As we enter our 13th year of assisting military families on the move, we want to thank you for your continued support and for spreading the word about MilitaryByOwner to your friends and colleagues. We would be nothing without you!
We like to start each new year with a fresh look for our newsletter and this year is no exception. The new format is optimized to be read on smart phones and tablets, making it easier for you to enjoy the information we compile for you. We would love to hear your feedback!
The 2013 BAH rates have been released. Our Military Life segment sheds light on the process of calculating the individual rates as well as a link to the BAH calculator so that you can check the rates at your military installation. Important to note that if the rates went down for your current duty station, they will only apply to those individuals newly relocated to that military installation.
MilitaryByOwner will be participating in a couple of events this month and we would love to meet you, so please stop by and see us if you are at either of the following events:
SnoFest 2013
25-27 January 2013
Keystone Resort, CO
West 2013
29-31 January 2013
San Diego Convention Center
I hope that your holiday season was full of joy and relaxation and that the coming year is one of good health and happiness.

Forgiven Mortgage Debt Relief Extended Through 2013
Monica Schaefer
MilitaryByOwner Advertising, Inc.
While most may be tired of hearing about the fiscal cliff and are aware that most of the negotiating had to do with taxes and spending, there is an important component that was passed that affects individual homeowners who are utilizing a short sale to sell their home in 2013.
The Extension of Exclusion from Gross Income of Discharge of Qualified Principal Residence Indebtedness has been extended through January 1, 2014. This extends the tax benefit of the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, which provided a tax exemption for homeowners who had sold their homes for less than what was owed to the bank.

President Obama on Providing Housing Relief to the Veterans and Servicemembers
Brentt Taylor MortgageLoan.com
The difficulty veterans have re-entering society is well known, and it is a difficulty exacerbated by the housing crisis of the past several years. To that end, in March 2012, President Barack Obama outlined in his State of the Union address plan to provide relief for veterans and servicemembers facing difficulties securing a mortgage, having their home foreclosed upon inappropriately, or refused a fair interest rate for their loans. In addition, the plan outlines fee reductions for borrowers seeking to refinance through the Federal Housing Administration.

DOD Announces 2013 Housing, Subsistence Allowance Rates
By Claudette Roulo American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Dec. 17, 2012 - On Jan. 1, 2013, service members can expect to see an average increase of about $60 in their 2013 basic allowance for housing, Cheryl Anne Woehr, the BAH program manager, said Dec. 13.
Overall, rates went up an average of 3.8 percent, Woehr said. Rate increases were spread throughout the country. "There wasn't any particular one region that was a big winner or a big loser this year," she said.
Service members in New York City will receive the largest increase this year -- 14.7 percent on average -- followed closely by Altus Air Force Base, Okla., which will see a 14.1 percent average increase.

Testimonial
I used MilitaryByOwner to rent my rental property and received fantastic results. I posted the ad and received three emails requesting information the next day! I rented my place to a military family which has lived there for four years. I will only use MilitaryByOwner from now on.
