Petersburg Receives National Recognition for Children & Family Services


A new report from the National League of Cities recognizes Petersburg for its efforts to improve the lives of children and families. Petersburg was included in the report for the Supporting Alternatives for our Valued Youth initiative (SAVY), a coalition of City and nonprofit agencies that provide programs and recreational activities to youth,  and for the Family Stabilization Program operated by Petersburg Department of Social Services, helps at-risk families with finances, education, healthcare, and independent living skills for youth. "I am pleased that Petersburg was recognized nationally for its programs and efforts to improve the quality of life for our youth and at-risk families," reports City Manager William E. Johnson, III, "these initiatives are party of the City strategic plan to reduce poverty, improve health, boost employment, improve education, and overall better serve the citizens of Petersburg."  The Municipal Leadership for Children and Families in Small and Mid-Sized Cities, highlights innovative strategies for services in such areas as early childhood development, education, health and safety, family economic success, neighborhood revitalization, and youth civic engagement.
