Medicaid Expansion Debate is Key to Virginia Budget
The Virginia General Assembly adjourns Feb. 23, but expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act remains a divided issue. Secretary of Health and Human Resources William A. Hazel Jr. reports progress in negotiating reforms with the federal government, quantified projected budget savings and costs from expansion. Nonprofit Virginia, reports that approving the expansion will positively affect Virginia nonprofit organizations and the individuals they serve. In the Southside, House Districts 62, 63 and 66 would see 50,000+ uninsured individuals gain coverage according to the Commonwealth Institute. Opponents to the expansion cite costs to an already stretched government budget and seek significant reforms to control costs.
