Letter from the Principal
|
As we all know, the last week has been an emotional and trying time for us all. Our first priority was ensuring that our campus and students were safe. Last Thursday, school was closed as law enforcement investigated. Once law enforcement confirmed our community was again safe, the NHS staff came together on Friday to plan next steps.
On Tuesday May 31, the Novato High staff and administration will welcome back our students to our campus. While we will have a regular schedule of classes all week, teachers and staff have been prepared to lead fact-based discussions and answer student questions. Also, teachers have been trained to identify students who may need additional support: we will continue to have a variety of mental health clinicians including licensed therapists, school psychologists and crisis counselors, many of whom are bilingual, available to students and their families throughout the week.
We are anticipating a media presence near campus on Tuesday. Please consider refraining from speaking to the press out of respect for those involved and the general well-being of our students who are impacted by this tragic event. Novato High teachers, staff and administration will be a visible presence in the front of the school and along Arthur Street.
Novato High continues to be a safe place where all students are accepted and valued. We all look forward to being together on Tuesday as a united Hornet community.

Message from Student Body President
Romario Conrado
|
To whom it may concern:
Thank you so much for taking time to read this email.
My name is Romario Conrado and I am a Senior at Novato High School. As the Student Body President at Novato high, I am reaching out to you for your help. As you already know, a tragic event in Novato resulted in the death of an NHS student and injuries of another. I am hoping that you are able to help me spread the word about a fundraiser Novato high is putting on to aid our fellow families. If you can mention it somewhere on the front page -- that'd be wonderful, but anywhere would do as well.
Please read my Facebook/gofundme post below to understand more:
Hello, Novato Community:
First off, I wish to extend my thoughts to all affected by the tragic events that occurred on May 25th, 2016. In times like this, it reminds us of how important our community members and loved ones are. Therefore, the Associated Student Body of Novato High wants to make sure the rips in our community are peacefully sewn.
Money will be collected to aid the victims' families from the May 25th shooting and stabbing. The money raised will be divided in half and given to the family of the student that passed and to the family of the student that is recovering from injuries. You can donate money by dropping donations off in Mrs. Searle's room or in the office (both areas will have a safe and enclosed box). Donations will begin Tuesday and the collection will last until the end of the school year. Any additional donations past this time limit will be sent to the families as well. All checks can be made out to Novato High School and we can assure you all the money will be sent directly to the families. Additionally, two large banners will be created for anyone to sign. It will read "In our thoughts..." and will be given when the money is donated.
I am proud to say that, already, $470 has been collected from Novato High Seniors alone and $925 has been raised online. Let's keep this going.
Share this information. Ask your parents. Withdraw some cash. Wiggle your piggy bank. Search under your couch pillows. Donate a percent of your graduation money. Raise money. Do anything to help out a fellow family in need.
A GoFundMe was created after multiple requests to do so. The purpose of using this resource is to help people that do not live in the Novato Area or find it more convenient to donate online. Here's the link: www.gofundme.com/hornetstrong.
Regardless of the circumstances, no person or family or group of people deserve to undergo a sudden loss. As a Swarm of Hornets, let us direct our attention and efforts to repairing our nest.
Lastly, I (Romario Conrado) am always here for anyone. Even if we've never even communicated, do not hesitate on sending a message if you need an ear, a shoulder, a friend, or even a hug. I will never turn down the opportunity to help out a fellow human being.
I will end this long post with a quote: "But in all of the sadness, when you're feeling that your heart is empty, and lacking, you've got to remember that grief isn't the absence of love. Grief is the proof that love is still there." - Tessa Shaffer.
Again, any publicity is will be amazing. Thank you so much for your time and I hope all is well,
Romario Conrado

TONIGHT AT NOVATO HIGH SCHOOL
Novato Community: Candlelight Vigil. Sunday, May 29th at 7pm
|
Location is in front of the Novato High School Library (grass field).
This event is meant for the community to come together as one entity and start our healing process. The Vigil is opened to ANYONE and EVERYONE. Because the victim's name will most likely not be released anytime soon, this Vigil is in honor of not only the NHS student lost as well as anyone who you've lost in the past. We are creating a space to support anyone who needs it. Come by, light a candle, and be a part of the loving Novato community.
The event simply starts at 7pm -- you can stop by whenever and leave whenever you're ready to. We urge you to bring your own candles but we will also provide some.

"END OF YEAR TEACHER GIFTS"
|
Your NHS Teachers and Staff have worked hard all year to teach your kids and help them succeed. Many of them have put in countless hours outside of the classrooms, writing college and scholarship recommendation letters and helping with tutoring. It's time to give them a much deserved thank you gift! Your PTSA Hospitality Team is putting together a special gift for each one of them and we'd love to have you contribute to this group gift. Please feel free to contribute whatever amount is comfortable for you and your family (keeping in mind that your child likely has 5-7 teachers) and bring that gift to Cathy Benson in the office. Checks can be made out to Kristin Van Weele, and can also be mailed to her home at 1415 Monte Maria Ave., Novato, CA 94947. Thanks for your support!

Hello NHS Families: We wanted to let you all know about an exciting fundraiser we're beginning that is generating money for MSA. MSA16 For every ticket bought using the MSA16 code, MSA will receive a $10 donation from the Mountain Play, so make sure to use it and share with your friends!

Instrument Drive for Novato Unified Students!
Our goal is to collect 100 instruments by June, 2016.
Bring us your trumpet, trombone, flute, or clarinet and receive a tax deductible donation form! The Novato Unified School District, in partnership with School Fuel, NUSD's education foundation, is conducting a musical instrument drive to help support the elementary music program by providing instruments for students who need them.
There may be many instruments in our community that are no longer being played that would greatly benefit our students. Music education begins in the first grade with vocal music, learning rhythm instruments and reading music and continues through the third grade. In the fourth grade, all students learn the ukulele giving them the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, read music and sing all at the same time. In the fifth grade, instrumental music is introduced and the need for instruments.
Donations will be accepted at the Instrument Drive Booth at the Tour of Novato in Downtown Novato on May 14 between 10:00
am and 2:00 pm at the corner of Sherman and Grant Streets.
If you are unable to drop off your instrument at the Tour of Novato, you may also drop them off at your local elementary school. Our goal is to collect 100 instruments by June, 2016. If you have questions, please contact
