It's Prom Season!

We also realize that the likelihood of our teens going to parties while they're off from school is pretty good, so we've put together some information that we hope will help you start conversations with your kids about responsible celebrating.

With most senior proms taking place in San Francisco, questions may arise about safe transportation and pre-prom or after-parties.

According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA, youth are more likely to drink with their friends at parties and in another person's home, and youth binge drinking exhibits seasonal fluctuations, with increasing rates around exams and social occasions, such as homecoming, prom, and sporting events.

Here are some tips to help ensure a safe and fun night:

Set a Zero-Tolerance Norm for Alcohol and Substance Use: Parents are the number one influence on their child's attitudes towards drug and alcohol use. According to SAMHSA, more than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision to drink or not drink. So they really are listening, and it's important that you send a clear, strong and consistent message about your expectations, and the dangers of underage drinking.

Talk to other Parents:

Let them know you do not allow underage drinking in your home, and you do not allow your child to attend parties where youth are drinking. Most parents feel the same way you do, so don't be afraid to set expectations to ensure your child's safety.

If You Rent a "Party Bus",

Read the Fine Print: In 2012 Gov. Brown signed a bill designed to address the growing popularity of alcohol-fueled parties on privately chartered buses. If you plan to rent a bus, or your child is planning to ride on one, make sure you understand what's involved. To protect yourself and the young riders, check all of their belongings before onboarding and again when they off-board.

In Marin, Underage Parties Come with Hefty Fines:

The Social Host Ordinance (SHO) is being enforced across Marin County, and holds adults responsible for hosting youth drinking in their households, whether or not adults are present. First-offense fines can be up to $750, with a possible addition of recovery fees.

Go to the Mountain Play and Support MSA!

Hello NHS Families:

We wanted to let you all know about an exciting fundraiser we're beginning that is generating money for MSA. We have joined forces with the Mountain Play, Zephyr Real Estate, and Sloat Garden Center in a fundraiser called "Play For Art's Sake" which helps redirect funds from Mountain Play's ticket sales towards our MSA classrooms and productions.

If you or anyone you know is planning on attending the Mountain Play's production of West Side Story this May/June, you can support MSA when you purchase your tickets by simply entering this code at checkout:
MSA16

For every ticket bought using the MSA16 code, MSA will receive a $10 donation from the Mountain Play, so make sure to use it and share with your friends!

To purchase tickets, or to find more information on the Mountain Play, visit their website at www.mountainplay.org, or call (415) 383-1100.

Thank you for helping to raise money for MSA!

Every little bit helps! And please thank the sponsors of this program, Zephyr and Sloat for their generous contributions.

Sincerely,

Julian O'Byrne, Abby Green & Chloe Winnett
Mountain Play Junior Board of Directors Members and NHS/MSA Students

Instrument Drive for Novato Unified Students!

Our goal is to collect 100 instruments by June, 2016.

Bring us your trumpet, trombone, flute, or clarinet and receive a tax deductible donation form!  The Novato Unified School District, in partnership with School Fuel, NUSD's education foundation, is conducting a musical instrument drive to help support the elementary music program by providing instruments for students who need them.

There may be many instruments in our community that are no longer being played that would greatly benefit our students.  Music education begins in the first grade with vocal music, learning rhythm instruments and reading music and continues through the third grade.  In the fourth grade, all students learn the ukulele giving them the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, read music and sing all at the same time.  In the fifth grade, instrumental music is introduced and the need for instruments.

Donations will be accepted at the Instrument Drive Booth at the Tour of Novato in Downtown Novato on May 14 between 10:00
am and 2:00 pm at the corner of Sherman and Grant Streets.

If you are unable to drop off your instrument at the Tour of Novato, you may also drop them off at your local elementary school.  Our goal is to collect 100 instruments by June, 2016.  If you have questions, please contact

Sally Carbonaro at scarbonaro@nusd.org

scarbonaro@nusd.org.
