Instrument Drive for Novato Unified Students!

Bring us your trumpet, trombone, flute, or clarinet and receive a tax deductible donation form!  The Novato Unified School District, in partnership with School Fuel, NUSD's education foundation, is conducting a musical instrument drive to help support the elementary music program by providing instruments for students who need them.

There may be many instruments in our community that are no longer being played that would greatly benefit our students.  Music education begins in the first grade with vocal music, learning rhythm instruments and reading music and continues through the third grade.  In the fourth grade, all students learn the ukulele giving them the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, read music and sing all at the same time.  In the fifth grade, instrumental music is introduced and the need for instruments.

Donations will be accepted at the Instrument Drive Booth at the Tour of Novato in Downtown Novato on May 14 between 10:00
am and 2:00 pm at the corner of Sherman and Grant Streets.

If you are unable to drop off your instrument at the Tour of Novato, you may also drop them off at your local elementary school.  Our goal is to collect 100 instruments by June, 2016.  If you have questions, please contact

Sally Carbonaro at scarbonaro@nusd.org

The California Assessment of Student
Performance and Progress

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP is the new state academic test program, which replaces the former Standardized Testing and Reporting or STAR.  This assessment system includes computer adaptive tests in English-language arts and mathematics as well as paper-based tests for science. We are looking forward to the information from these tests which can be used to monitor students' progress and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career.  The assessment will also provide an academic checkup by measuring real-world skills like critical thinking and problem solving.

For our school, students in 10th and 11th Grade will take the test April 25th through April 29th. The assessment will be administered over multiple days. Following this administration, students will receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be sent home to parents and will include an overall score, a description of the student's achievement level for English language arts and mathematics, and other information. To learn about the types of questions on the computer-based test, you and your child can view the practice test online at the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Test Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp.
