EMERGENCY DRILL IS RESCHEDULED FOR
THIS COMING THURSDAY
MARCH 17, 2016
Novato High School will be conducting a full length Emergency Evacuation Drill. The drill will take at least 75 minutes, therefore, students will be expected to say with their classes and teachers for the duration of the drill on the football field. This drill is long overdue. It is essential for our Emergency Preparedness Team to go through evacuation procedures with students and staff so that we are all prepared in the case a real emergency. We will be testing our process with our emergency response team, first aid stations, family reunification, and facility evaluations. The schedule will not be altered for the day. I wanted our entire community to be aware of this so that there is no miscommunication regarding the legitimacy of the drill.
Thank you!

| 1:1 Student Mobile Devices Pilot Program
Programa piloto de dispositivos móviles para alumnos 1:1
|

1:1 Student Mobile Devices Pilot Program NUSD recognizes the need for a digital transformation in our classrooms that provides our students with the skills that allow them to be a successful member of our digital, global community. While it is also important to integrate technology in an effective and thoughtful manner into our schools, our current teaching methods are not always aligned and conducive to the effective use of technology. As a result, it is imperative that we complete a pilot with a few teachers in our schools as a way to evaluate the current classroom environment, the professional development needs of our teachers, and current skill level of our students. In addition, we must also incorporate our parent perspective and develop a strategic plan to incorporate student devices into more classrooms across the district. This spring the Novato Unified School District is undertaking a district-wide pilot program of 1:1 student mobile devices to increase students' and teachers' access to technology in the classroom and collect data about how to support a larger technology plan. This pilot has been designed for a select group of teachers at each school level (elementary, middle and high school) and all of the teachers were selected based on their current level of effective technology use in the classroom and their willingness to innovate and learn by having one-to-one access to student technology. This technology will be a tool to aid learning by developing student inquiry and critical thinking skills. It will also support teachers in the area of differentiated instruction in order to better assist students in reaching their individual learning goals. The teachers were selected through an application process and those selected were able to choose the type of device they would like to use based on a rationale on how the particular device would impact their instruction and student learning. Students in elementary and middle school will take the devices home. High school teachers will receive a classroom set.

GOT LEGOs?
Our new south Novato Library just opened their Makerspace.
|
Our NHS Library is moving into the next phase of its recreation into a 21st century library and we are creating a Makerspace.
A Makerspace is defined as a community / educationally operated workspace where students can collaborate on ideas to design, prototype and manufacture items.
What can you do to help?
If you have Legos (of any size) that you or your kids are no longer using - we would love to have them. Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Corey are gathering a group of students to brainstorm the space and create a list of additional items they would like to have.
If you have Legos to donate -
please bring them to Mr. Baldwin's office. If you would like me to come pick them up - I would be happy to do that as well.
Diane Gibbs. 415-884-4440. .

LCAP Survey
Encuesta LCAP
|
LCAP Survey
Under California's new school funding law, all school districts are required to prepare a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and part of the LCAP is getting input from parents, students and staff on the goals and achievements from the second year of implementation. Novato Unified School District is working with Hanover Research to solicit feedback regarding the NUSD LCAP. For those parents we have email addresses, you will be receiving an email from Hanover Research with a link to the survey. If you don't receive an email, the survey links can be found on the NUSD website. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.
Your feedback is important and is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Leslie Benjamin at lbenjamin@nusd.org.

Summer Japanese Exchange Student Hosting Opportunity
|
Interested in Japanese culture? Language? Anime?
The program is looking for families to host a student from July 28 - August 7th, 2016.
The program is looking for families to host a student from July 28 - August 7th, 2016.
Keep in mind that the program is sending Marin County students to Sakaide next summer.... So, please contact us if you have student that is interested.
Then, you might be interested in a short home-stay opportunity this summer being organized by the Sausalito-Sakaide Sister Cities Program. Sausalito and Sakaide (a city in southern Japan) have been exchanging students for an 11-day program every summer for over 25 years. This year, approximately 10 students (ages14-18) will come here for 11 days.
The program is looking for families to host a student from July 28 - August 7th, 2016.
The Sausalito Sister Cities program does all the work with putting together a packed program of daily activities for the delegate. Your family's role would be to drop the students off every morning at Sausalito City Hall and pick them up for dinner with you and your family every evening. There are also fun evening events that host families attend with their host student. In addition, if you have Japanese language skills, the program is looking for "Day Captains" who can accompany the group on their planned events. This would be a great opportunity to use those language skills (and maybe have something extra on that list of activities for your college application!).

Do you have room in your home
|
Marin County is currently facing a shortage of foster homes, especially for teens and sibling groups. We need good people who are willing to give back to our community in this very special way. We make every effort to keep children in the same community when possible and in order to do that, we need a larger and more diverse pool of foster homes.
We offer orientations monthly and the next dates will be
Thursday, March 17 and Tuesday, April 19.

* NHS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROCESS
Scholarships applications are judged blind. When students turn in their application to the College and Career Center, the applicant's name is taken off and a number assigned before the applications are turned over to the committee for review in order to maintain anonymity.
Committee members will review each application and score it. Those scores are turned in before the live presentations. Each presentation will also be scored. After the presentations, those scores are turned in and combined with the written application scores by an impartial person outside of the scholarship committee.
Scholarships are not based on academic excellence, but on the combination of experiences the student has had in and out of school, the completeness and thoughtfulness of the application, and the preparation and ideas shared during the presentation. The number of scholarships awarded may change from year to year based on the number of applicants and the budget. Not every student who applies is awarded a scholarship.
