Providing a High-Quality, 21st Century Education
|
With award-winning schools and rigorous, innovative programs, Novato Unified School District (NUSD) strives to equip each student with the 21st-century skills needed to succeed in college and today's workforce, focusing on collaboration, community and critical thinking.
While our students continue to excel, further updates are needed to our classrooms, labs and learning technology to support 21st-century education and to enable us to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in college and today's careers. Improvements to school facilities, including basic repairs like fixing or replacing aging and leaky roofs, are also needed to protect the quality of academic instruction.
NUSD is undertaking a comprehensive education facilities master planning process focused on community engagement. The completed master plan will outline the specific facilities improvements needed at each of our schools to fully enable our district to provide our students with a rigorous and engaging education.
WE WANT YOUR INPUT
Education facility master plan meetings are taking place at each school. We invite you to provide input and ask questions during this process because your opinion is important to us. If you missed the first meeting, each school will have a second meeting, taking place from March 7 - 25, 2016. You can learn more about how to participate at your school site at
NEXT STEPS
NUSD is evaluating funding options to meet the identified facilities needs, as there are insufficient funds available in our district's regular operating budget for projects of this scope and scale. One solution NUSD is considering is a bond measure on a 2016 ballot to upgrade classrooms, labs and other school facilities for 21st-century learning. Any measure would include fiscal accountability protections, and all funds would be required to staying Novato schools to benefit local students. Contact Superintendent Jim Hogeboom at jhogeboom@nusd.org
or (415) 897-4211 for more information.
Summer Japanese Exchange Student Hosting Opportunity
|
Interested in Japanese culture? Language? Anime?
Then, you might be interested in a short home-stay opportunity this summer being organized by the Sausalito-Sakaide Sister Cities Program. Sausalito and Sakaide (a city in southern Japan) have been exchanging students for an 11-day program every summer for over 25 years. This year, approximately 10 students (ages14-18) will come here for 11 days. The program is looking for families to host a student from July 28 - August 7th, 2016.
The Sausalito Sister Cities program does all the work with putting together a packed program of daily activities for the delegate. Your family's role would be to drop the students off every morning at Sausalito City Hall and pick them up for dinner with you and your family every evening. There are also fun evening events that host families attend with their host student. In addition, if you have Japanese language skills, the program is looking for "Day Captains" who can accompany the group on their planned events. This would be a great opportunity to use those language skills (and maybe have something extra on that list of activities for your college application!).
Keep in mind that the program is sending Marin County students to Sakaide next summer.... So, please contact us if you have student that is interested.

Do you have room in your home and heart for a child?
|
Marin County is currently facing a shortage of foster homes, especially for teens and sibling groups. We need good people who are willing to give back to our community in this very special way. We make every effort to keep children in the same community when possible and in order to do that, we need a larger and more diverse pool of foster homes.
Please come to an orientation meeting to learn more on Wednesday, February 24 from 7-8:30 pm at 3250 Kerner Blvd, Room 107 in San Rafael. We offer orientations monthly and the next dates will be Thursday, March 17 and Tuesday, April 19. For more information please call (415) 473-2200 or visit our website at marinhhs.org/foster-care

* NHS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROCESS
Scholarships applications are judged blind. When students turn in their application to the College and Career Center, the applicant's name is taken off and a number assigned before the applications are turned over to the committee for review in order to maintain anonymity.
Committee members will review each application and score it. Those scores are turned in before the live presentations. Each presentation will also be scored. After the presentations, those scores are turned in and combined with the written application scores by an impartial person outside of the scholarship committee.
Scholarships are not based on academic excellence, but on the combination of experiences the student has had in and out of school, the completeness and thoughtfulness of the application, and the preparation and ideas shared during the presentation. The number of scholarships awarded may change from year to year based on the number of applicants and the budget. Not every student who applies is awarded a scholarship.
