Letter from the Principal
Schedule Change October 14, 2015
|
Dear Hornet Parents:
As you may have read in the eNews, Oct. 14th will be a minimum day for all students.
All students will begin the day at 8:00am and finish at 11:30am.
Students will be participating in activities by grade-level and will be notified where these activities will take place on campus.
Seniors will be participating in the Redwood Credit Union's facilitated simulation, the Bite of Reality, which is a thought-provoking, practical and engaging look at financial realities of the adult world.
Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT in classrooms. This test is without cost and allows students to get a sense of the SAT and allows juniors to be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Test results will be shared with both parents and students. A parent night will be sponsored by NUSD administration to help families interpret results.
Freshmen will participate in a variety of activities including a mindfulness session, a college and career planning session hosted by 10,000 Degrees, and an interactive Naviance workshop. They should come in comfortable clothing for an active day.
This is an instructional day and all of these activities are led by credentialed staff as well as guest facilitators. Attendance will be taken and information and skills gained may be incorporated into classes for the rest of the semester. There will be food available at break, but no lunch service on campus as students will be leaving at 11:30am.

Sinceramente,
Matt Baldwin

PSAT TO ALL SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
FREE OF CHARGE!!
|
NUSD is excited to be administering the PSAT to all sophomores and juniors free of charge on Wednesday, October 14, at both Novato and San Marin High Schools during the school day. This test is a pre-test for the new SAT being given beginning in March 2016. They test the same skills and knowledge as the SAT - in a way that makes sense for both grade levels. When students get their test results, they will be connected to College Board and
Khan Academy® accounts to get free personalized SAT study recommendations.
The PSAT is a great way to preview and practice for the SAT. Each student will receive an individual student score report, you can find an example here: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/sample-psat-nmsqt-score-report.pdf In addition, the test results will let you know which AP courses students may be interested in. This will also help our schools grow their AP programs as we will have more information about students' strengths and interests. More details about the test administration will be sent home soon.
The PSAT, Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, and the SAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test, are given a few times a year by the College Board. The College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects student to college success and opportunity. Many colleges and universities use these test results as one of multiple measures when reviewing a student's application.

P.E. WAIVER DEADLINE !
|
We must be compliant with our District policies. In that spirit, we are trying to educate our athletes as well as offer an amnesty period until
November 1, 2015
for any waivers from prior years to be turned in. All late forms are subject to administrative review.
waiver
As you know, all 9th graders must take PE (Ed Code 51225) and students must complete a second year of PE in either grade 10, 11, or 12. Students in grades 10, 11, or 12 may complete an Exemption Request Form and is available in the Counseling Office. Forms must be signed by the coach to verify that the student has attended practice, participated in training exercises and completed the entire season of the sport as well as signed by the Parent/guardian for permission to apply for an exemption. If approved, this Request will exempt a student from a semester of the second year PE requirement. To be exempt from the full year, two seasons of a sport (any sport) must be played.
To be eligible, these students must have completed one year of PE and have satisfactorily passed at least five out of six fitness areas of the grade nine California Physical Fitness Test which is given to 9th graders during their year of PE. If students are new to NHS, they should speak to their counselor about when the Physical Fitness Test will be given. Please note: Any senior who has not fulfilled the Physical Exemption Form requirements entering their senior year will be enrolled in PE 2. Dropping PE2 after the drop deadline will result in a "W" on the student's transcript.
If you participated in a full season of a CIF sanctioned sport as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior and wish to use that as an alternative to a semester of second year of PE, you should have turned in the PE Exemption Request Form aka "Waiver form" to your counselor. These forms MUST be completed and turned in to your counselor by December 1st for Fall Sports, March 1st for Winter Sports and June 1st for Spring Sports. Forms turned in after the deadline will not be considered (NUSD Board Policy 6142.7).
However, some of our athletes still have the completed forms and failed to realize the importance of the due dates. We must be compliant with our District policies. In that spirit, we are trying to educate our athletes as well as offer an amnesty period until November 1, 2015 for any waivers from prior years to be turned in. All late forms are subject to administrative review.

Free Sports at Dominican
|
Hello,
I hope the year is off to a great start for you and your families! I am happy to share information about a great after school sports program for Marin middle and high school students offered by Dominican University of California. This free sports program, being held in the new Dominican sports facility, Allen Athletics Complex, offers sports programs, sport clinics, and open gym time. Additionally, they offer transportation from Terra Linda and San Rafael high schools and possibly other central locations Attached is the schedule in both English and Spanish. The program currently runs from 3:30 to 5:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The program was for high schools students last year and they have now expanded middle student students. All students from Marin are invited. This is a great opportunity for kids to play sports and an especially good opportunity for families who may not be able to afford to pay for sports clinics or recreation programs for their kids. Please share with the parents in your schools.
If you need additional information, please contact the Cory Hansen, the Coordinator, at cory.hansen@dominican.edu or feel free to contact my office if we can assist in any way.
